Carrera S or C4S That is the question!
Hey everyone. I'm beginning my search for a 993. 96-98 I have an 87' 911, great driving machine. I want to add a 993 to my toy collection. This car will be used for the street (not daily driver) and perhaps AX. Can't decide between an 'S' and a 'C4S'. How about some feed back on these fine examples of proper Porsche engineering. I'm interested in the options that are available. Undoubtedly I want Turbo Brakes-Leather-Motor Sound-and all the basics. What do you owners have to share? Advice. Caveats.
Thanks

If you want turbo brakes then you have to go for the 4S, the 2S only has standard brakes. Most say that unless you track the car, you won't notice the difference between big reds and standard brakes.

You may be able to find a C2S with Big Reds , as that was an option on the RWD widebody.
I THINK the 18inch tire/rim setup was also an option on the C2S...whereas I know it came standard on the C4S.
Not many options on the C4S...supple leather seats, heated, 8 or 12 way power adjustable or sport seats( if you can find them) Carbon Fiber tidbits may also have been optioned up on either car. Motorsound...no big deal there....if the car you find does not have it....you can always drill the air box out to match the factory pattern (the imprints for the holes are on the box) or you can pick one up on ebay that has the chrome(plastic) inlet. Turbo S aerokit was an option too...as Ken's SWWWEEEET car demonstrates.
Options aside...it really depends on whether you'd prefer awd in the C4S or pure throttle induced steering of the C2S...either way......you'll pay more for the widebody look. Great choices regardless of your final decision.
Good Luck !!

IMO, premium for C4S is a better deal all around. For a small premium above 2S you get big reds, awd, and, I know there is some controversy here, a better suspension, I believe. Unless you don't want awd, I think C4S is way to go. 2S offers only split grill and wide body (which is nice indeed!) for permium over normal C2s.
My $.02.

Look at the price check on the C2S listed below. Think about what a similar narrow body would go for. That is your baseine S premium. I would think step up to C4S from that isn't too much more but get all the extra goodies.

The 2s is not a bad choice, it's a bit quicker than the 4s, but only when the road is dry! (Where are you from?) Here in our rainy Belgium, 4s is defenitly a better choice.
On another point of view, the 4s was most of the time much better equiped: full leather seats, turbo brakes and chassis, 18in wheels were here standard on the car.
If your are lucky enough to find a 2s or a 4s with the X51 option (the 3.8 engine option from the factory) do not hesitate a second! They keep their value and have 300Hp
And for your "large country" the 92 liters fuel tank should give you around 600km range, and is a good option to have too.
Good luck

IMO of course.
The C2S is more collectible than the C4S. Few made!
Other factors: C2S is more nimble though not necessarily faster.
Also lighter and has less complex drive train to send you to the poor house.
You can always retrofot Big Reds. As in the piccy below

As a former 2S owner, can gladly confirm that is an impressively definitve link!
Re the above: the suspension (and chassis) on both 2S and 4S is identical. And Big Reds were not a factory option on the 2S, but you can of course get aftermarket OEM's fitted. Porsche Exclusive did that, too.
Re Motorsound: the Motorsound package was not available in Europe from 1997 on, so therefore not on any 2S's. Not sure what the specs were in the US, however.
I loved my 2S - great car to drive, both everyday and track days. Looks awesome. And is increasingly rare, and thus desirable. I personally don't think you will notice too much of a difference in wet/slippy etc. conditions. My feeling is it's a myth that the AWD is genuinely noticeably better there. Bigger difference on the track, though.
So as many have said, try both and check which driving feel you prefer.
Have fun test-driving!

Hi Woodcock,
Your statement made me hesitate for a second, but I found back in a Porsche specialized magazine, that "the 2s does not have the turbo's chassi like the 4S". This is sure for what concerns the french and Belgian market. I can hardly think that it is not the same anywhere else.
A friend of mine has a 2s, and confirm this...
For what concerns the drive in rainy weather: we both went to the Porsche meeting in Zell am See last year, driving from Belgium to München under pouring rain...BIG advantage the 4S, tires being the same
Cheers

I could be wrong (not an auto-x veteran), but wouldn't a standard narrow body car be preferable in that venue (more nimble with less understeer)?

GrantG you are probably right....but the look!!
I would say if tracks days are your option go for 2s, and the 3.8 is from far the best. Everyday use: 4s On track, the 4s is to heavy (at least mine, too many options!the drive for the front wheels is only 100kg)
here are some figures:
993 4S 285HP //wheight/power ratio 5,08 //from 80 to 150km/h:7"709// from 100 to 200: 15"721
993 2S 285HP // 4,91// 6"176// 12"486
993 2S 300HP // 4,67// 6"379// 12"071
993 4S 300HP // 4,83// 7"647// 14"728
All equiped with 18in wheels.
Cheers
