It depends on how his car is set up. If he just stuck a 454 in a Camaro then you should take him easy. If it is set up right and he can get traction and the motor is built then it could be trouble, a lot of if's though. It sounds like a 13-14 second car to me, if thats the case you should take him.

454 'eh?

Well, if that is true, this guy is a hot rodder. I can see his car now... Bet it looks like:

It would have to, because to shoehorn a 454 in that tiny 1967 engine bay would have taken some "mods."

Keep in mind... Some 454 engines are just "truck motors" and worth about 200 HP. That could be what he is packing.

Go ahead & line up next to him, as I bet he will get so over excited that he will just sit & smoke the tires as you run away & hide. Be sure to really rev up your car when you line up, that ALWAYS makes them overdo the launch- ie: That type are just chomping at the bit to beat a Porsche. It works to our advantage.

Amateurs.

Thanks for making my Thursday better!

After reading the two threads on this subject, I'm curious of the outcome of your encounter. Could you please post the result? Don't you need a little practice before you drag race him. Good luck; maybe just taking him on will make him back off.

Like Michael said. If it's done right and he can get the power down you could be in trouble. I had a '67 Chevy II that we forced a 427 (L88) into and with the right tires it ran mid 11's in the quarter back in the late 60's. There have been a lot of improvements in tire technology so don't run for pink slips!

If the Camaro is tubbed with a cage, then I would worry. If it is not tubbed, even with a bottle (NOS), you should be fine. The launch is almost everything. If he is willing to give to space (car lengths) then all the better. If the car is tubbed, ask him for the "move" as well. Thats when the race does not start until he sees your car move. Thats worth at least a full car length.

"Tubbed" is a secret code word that means the owner of the Camaro 454 car has a partial interest in a Porsche Parts House that will soon be steppping forward to sell you a new first gear, or some new synchros, or possibly even a new G-50 transmission. Rumor has it that this company also has an interest in a Bail Bonds company that will be there to help out should you get arrested for Street Racing....just trying to help

I am no expert, but a 454 Camaro is certainly something to worry about. 2 days ago I was driving my 993 C4 and there was a brand new Chevrolet Lumina SS behind me(not sure what the counterpart is named in the US) , but the car looks very "civilized", single but large exhaust, quiet engine, 4 doors, nothing like a 'vette for instance. I was driving in 2nd. gear at around 4000 RPM, and had a car in front of me, as soon as the car moved away, I smashed the throttle to the floor, until 3rd. gear @ 6500 RPM, the Lumina remained stuck to my butt, then I changed lanes because he was flasing his lights to pass me!!. Very frustrating experience.
Still love my car, but I am definitely more humble today.

I can't even believe we are discussing a drag race with Joe Dirt over there. Tell him to take his hot rod, his Lynard Skynard 8-track, his Marlboro reds and his 6-pack of Busch and go to the local gun club. I'm sure he'll find a taker there.

A big block Chevy is not a "tight fit", in fact Camaros came stock with various big block engines (396, 427...)which all have the same external dimensions. True, it depends on the setup of the car, but it could be anything from a 12-13 sec car to a 9 second beast. I would pass on this drag race.

I agree with DJ - that generation of Camaros were offered by the factory with the 396 "big block" engine, which has the same external dimensions as the 454 (the bore and stroke are larger on the 454). In addition, if you had some connections, you could order a COPO ("cental office production order") Camaro with the L-88 427 big-block (conservatively rated at 430hp/485ft./lbs. of torque) from the factory. Both the 454 and 396 bolt up to the Turbo 400 automatic transmission with no modifications.

"Tubs" refers to modifications to the rear wheel wells to accomodate larger rear tires within the factory body work. Tubs are usually used in connection with a narrowed rear axle. If someone has gone to the trouble of tubbing their car, you can be pretty much sure that the rest of it is tuned in for drag racing.

A mildly-worked 454 will put out 500hp. That Camaro should weight no more than 3200 lbs. Those cars were made to drag-race - your C4 was not. I wouldn't tangle with it.

I think you may get a kick out of dragging anyway. Even if you'll lose(depends how much) like maybe 1-2 car lengths then IMO that's darn impressive since your car is a 6 cyl and his is an 8 cyl. The other driver maybe more impressed with how well your car did. If you win that's a different story-Bragging rights please!!!. Regards. Mike

I think you'll get smoked in a typical drag race. I've never been impressed with the power or acceleration of my 993 and am constantly verbally abused by my Corvette and (late model) Camaro friends.

Why not ask him to throw a chicane in the race to make things interesting. Big block Camaro's turn like a ship!

Tend to agree with 951batmobile (????), grow up. Is this worth the cost of a clutch or tranny? Porsches weren't made for 1/4 mile drags, but more for what happens after that quarter mile. Ignore the moron.

(S - personally, feel you'll be stomped.)
