FWIW, a tipical street rod is built for 1/4 mile(1/8 mile for some) ONLY, so if you want to kick him bad, ask him to race 0-140 mph...

My guess is if his Camaro is close to a decent drag set-up, it will smoke any 993. The car should easily be very low 12's or mid 11's and could easily be faster. I wouldn't even take the 0-140 gamble because I think we'd end up short there as well.

Also, I would think that anyone driving a 454 Camaro would have much more hole-shot practice than most 993 drivers.

Now, take them out on a great road course, and the two cars would be on different planets.

I wouldn't waste my clutch/tires/tranny on the issue...if the guy persists, see if he wants to meet you at the next local track event, and see what he says. His car is made for straight line speed (drag racing) yours is not...get him into your environment (a road course)

Geezz you guys...

Don't make this 993 guy out to be a puss in his office. Telling him to not drag this guy cause he will break something is boarder line ludicrous. These 993 (and other 911's for that matter) do not explode on contact people!

Now I am not condoning street racing (God forbid!), but people... If this guy takes this Camaro out to some abandoned area & walks it with his 993 - then hooray. His 993 will be fine (its not a requirement to drop the clutch from 6K RPM to do this ya know), and he might just end up revealing that the Camaro guy as a poseur.

And so what if he gets his 993 beat. At least he can still be a man and stand tall, not tuck his tail between his legs & run like some of you have recommended.

This could be a safe fun exercise ya know. AND YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO ABUSE THE CAR. Heck, do a 5 mph roll on up to 80 MPH on an empty stretch of road. The outcome will be apparent by then.

Let me guess... Some of you would NEVER do 80 MPH on the street right?

I think even you would agree, that you need proper aerodynamic wings to acheive 80mph on the streets!! That little motorized "stock" wing is just not able to handle such speed, and still keep the car grounded!!!!now if you had....say a 3.8 rsr wing mounted... You could run the 1/4 mile in reverse..and get to a speed of approx. 175, and a time of less than 4 seconds!!!Me thinks this would probably beat the "nasty big block chevy"!!!

From the business end you are in a loose loose situation.

This is why.

(1). You drag him and wins, he will say, "Yeah, you should beat me, your car cost so much more than my car"

(2). You drag him and loose, he will say, "Yeah, your expensive German toy is no match for the affordable Detroit muscle, you should have invested your money in an American car."

(3). You reject the challenge, he will say, "What are you afraid of? Chicken!"

I have always avoided drag challenges at all cost, simply because I know there is no way to win no matter what. So instead I would turn the conversation around…

When a muscle car person say something like "Is that car pretty fast?" I will just say, "Well, it is very fast for the designer's intended purpose, but it is not a fast car in your perspective." That usually would shut them up, and if they ask you "What do you mean?” then you can ask them, “Are you familiar with road course racing?" And if they said no, well…. you just dominated the conversation and there is no need to even discuss drag racing 1/4 mile.

I used the same line on my Corvette neighbor one time after his multiple verbal abuse and he still believed that there is no way that these “little German sewing machines” (his own words) can out perform an American muscle car, so he took a challenge on my own turf “Autocross”, and got wasted with all three of his kids watching…… We both arrived home at the same time and then he quickly parked his car in the garage and close the garage door and asked his kids to stay home, it was the funniest sight ever. Through that experience one of his kids turned into a Porsche fanatic…. (They have since moved away from me….)

Who cares how fast it is in the 1/4 mile anyway? Tell him if he wants to race, to show up at a track or an Autocross event, then see what happens. Explain that his car may be fast, but your's can cruise at over 130 all day long without overheating and melting down. A 454 can be very fast, or just have a *hitload of torque and fall off at 4000 rpm, resulting in less than 250 HP. He is obviously jealous of the Porsche. Typically, this 1/4 mile talk is all about feeling inferior anyway. It proves nothing other than who has the highest power to weight ratio. Lots of cars out there that can go fast in a straight line, but few that can be the overall balanced package of a Porsche.

I agree with Robin - why not tell him that your car is not set up with a drag racing clutch and that if you were to drop it for a hard launch you may end up with a $2,000 clutch job. But, you would love to see how a suped-up older car performs. Then find out when your next auto-cross is and ask him to join you. Betsstime of the day wins. The last DE I was at had an old muscle car there - I do not know what model it was. It was perhaps the slowest car on the course. He definitely had some power, and I give him credit for trying to learn to drive that car on a road course, but everyone was passing him.

We should all be proud to drive one of the world's best autos. However they are not drag racers, I know, I own both. My drag racer (Mustang with 525 Hp) is faster 0-60 than my 993. However, if you want to run, challenge him from a heads up rolling start of 30 mph. You can beat the pants off him with minimal stress on the drive train.

Take him up on his offer to drag race, as long as he will also compete in an autocross. If he wins the drag race and you win the autocross as expected, the person with the highest percentage time difference in their winning discipline will be the winner.
