Well thank the lord for the right to bear arms here in the US. That must be why I can't find any large city where it's safe to walk around in at night.
Having previously lived in that awful "socialist" country called Canada I can remember walking around in Toronto (pop. approx. 2 million now) at 2am and not having to care less where I was because there were only about 3 places in the city you shouldn't be walking around in. I'd be surprised to find any city of that size in the US where it's safe to walk around 90% of the city at all hours.

Why don't you go back to Canada then?

I've lived in the east village in NYC before it got gentrified, then I lived a couple of blocks from the tenderloin in SF. I've walked through those neighborhoods and many like them at all hours of the night. I never felt in danger. Haven't seen any shots fired. I've seen more fights outside of bars in the Marina and Upper East Side. Maybe you're just uncomfortable around people that are not like you.

I grew up as an army brat in a household that was well armed. When I was small, I got to shoot a gun and see what it did. It scared the hell out of me, and I didn't touch one for years. A little education, and I was squared away. If those hoodlums in really sketchy parts of town want to blow each other away, let them use guns. Move the process along faster I say.

"Well, we know what motivates the hoplophobe. He simply envies the man who can cope where he, the hoplophobe, cannot. A skilled, armed man lives on a plane of security and contentment different from that of others. This is not egalitarian! The man who cannot cut it, envies, fears, and sometimes hates the man who can." - Jeff Cooper

Sort sums up way most of the world say they hate the United States but will drop everything given the chance to move here.

To be fair to alex_95_cab, there are some people who genuinely feel more comfortable living in a country with “nanny” type government. I grew up in England and couldn’t handle it myself.

Now some Porsche content- If Robin’s 45 is a Porsche here is my firearm version of the 454 Camaro...

Ahh its so satisfying to finally hear the old "If you don't like it why don't you leave mantra" anytime someone new to the U.S. deigns to mention that all may not be hunky-dorry with all facets of the US life-style.

BTW I currently live 1/2 an hour outside San Francisco and know 3 people who live in or near the Tenderloin district. In the past year and a half they have related the following situations to me:

One of them was mugged a year ago while walking home at night.

Another had a party and a friend leaving the party at around 1am was caught in the middle of gunfire between two cars near the intersection he was stopped at.

Another friend who lives in Potrero Hill had a murder the next street over.

Now maybe my friends are just going through a few years of back luck but I think I know of only one person in Canada who has witnessed anything remotely like this sort of violence.

I've been to Buffalo, Cincinatti, Detroit, San Diego, Los Angeles amongst other large U.S. cities. How come the only places I ever saw people walking around at night in these cities were the bar areas?

I stand by my previous statement that you will not find a major U.S. city anywhere near as safe as its Canadian counterpart.

Why do you think that is?

I've lived in the US for 6 years now, and another 2 years as a child. Previous to the last 6 years I spent approx. 23 years in Canada (for the most part in Windsor, directly across from Detroit, as well as Toronto).

My perception of Canadians is that in general they are more law abiding and less likely to solve problems through violence. Also it is MUCH easier than Americans think to lawfully own guns in Canada but in general most people simply don't have them.

Toronto has a population of approx. 2.48 million people and you can safely walk at night through roughly 90% of the city including the down-town core. I can only think of roughly 3 areas in the city that you wouldn't want to be in late at night. As per my perusals on the web in 2000 and 2001 Toronto had a total of 60 murders each year with a population of 2.48 million. As per the link http://www.morganquitno.com/met00rank.pdf the national average in the U.S. is 5.5/100,000 people which works out to 136 per a city of the size of Toronto.

Comparable rates are (per 100,000 people)

US as a whole 5.5
Toronto 2.48
LA 10.6
San Antonio, TX 6.4
SF, CA 4.4

Toronto does not even rank on the top 138 metro US areas by murder rate in this document. And I think you will find that most other major cities in Canada are just as safe.

I have yet to see any medium or large city in the US which is as safe as any large city in Canada.

This is not to say that everything is great about Canada and I definitely feel that the good far outweighs the bad in the U.S. or I wouldn't be living here but all my personal experience as well as published data support the fact that Canada in general is a much safer place to live in.

Didn't this thread have something to do about a Camaro?

In any case, alex_95_cab, to answer your last post you correctly pointed out your stats that show Canada is a safer place than America. You also correctly point out that firearms can be owned in Canada too. In fact it is easier to legally own a gun in Canada than in the state of California especially San Francisco!

The problems some people may have is the inference of the following statement you made suggesting that US firearms laws are the root cause-

[quote] Well thank the lord for the right to bear arms here in the US. That must be why I can't find any large city where it's safe to walk around in at night.

My mom is a retired school teacher who still lives in England and loves Canada.

She doesn't think anyone should ever be allowed to own a firearm, but then again she doesn't think anyone should be allowed to buy a car that can go twice the maximum speed limit! (see Porsche content)

I probably shouldn't have made that inference since I agree that the right to bear arms is not the root cause of the violence problem in the U.S. That was just me speaking off the cuff w/o thinking my thoughts through I just think its very sad that this seems to be the solution nowadays and so many people think you have to have a gun to be safe. To me thats a very sad state of affairs to be in. Okay I'm off my soap-box for good on this issue.

A very informative post.

I was always under the impression that this Constitution thingy had something to do with liberalist anti-hunting folks, bleating about the right to arm bears.

Now it all makes sense...

I think that the stats speak volumes - there are "a few" more gun related deaths in the US than, say, the UK or Australia, where gun ownership isn't a right allocated by an historic document.

The problem is, if you try to drag the US into the 21st century and limit gun ownership, you'll get shot!

Bah.. stats. For all I know that just shows that Canadians drag thier enemy's to the U.S. and shoot them here. We're too gentle of a people to be that bad

We live where we live, and hopefully you're happy there. If not, move! I say we let this die until the camaro races the p-car. If you've still got some energy, we can always start talking smack on the cup holder thread.
