Lifters/Tappets Info required
I have a 95 LHD C2 (Iam in the UK) with 60K miles on the clock.
I have a question that I know has been covered before, but was trying to get as much info on one post as possible.
I have a noisey tappet on the drivers side.
I changed the oil last weekend (could not of done without Robins excellent instructions, Thanks) and this has made no difference.
Sometimes its quite others times its a distinctive tick.
1.How urgent is it to get this seen to.
2.What can happen if not.
3.What can be the causes of this.
4.Rough ideas on cost.
5.Can this be fixed DIY /(have acces to a lift etc) moderate experience with engines etc. does anybody have experience and or photos of the job.
don't expect all answers just as much info about the workings (and failings) of this part of the 993
Thanks in advance

As the 993 ages, failing lifters have become well known, typically the failure is because of the oring breaking down that seals the lifter inside the rocker arm. First signs are noise on start up, the lifter takes a few minutes to pump back up, it is not known how many cycles the lifters can sustain before it collapses for good. If you run your engine with a failed lifter your valve clearance goes to a zero clearance, you will burn that valve, that leads to valve failure (valve breaking off and lodging into piston). This is a fairly easy repair. IF you can do a valve adjust you can do this. It can be done without dropping the engine. I would suggest to replace the lifters in banks. The lifters are rather inexpensive. Email me if you need further help. Good luck
I just replaced the lifters on the left side, exhaust. The lifters and valve cover gasket are relatively cheap, and the DIY is really straightforward...at least on the exhaust side. I can't speak of the intake side, though this seems like it would really be a royal pain!
But in answer to your questions, BECAUSE it is relatively inexpensive (approx. $100 for 3 lifets and gasket in Southern CA) and easy to do, I'd do it...especially in light of the high cost of valve work should something really go awry! Ounce of prevention, and such

Tips:
Soak the new lifters in oil overnight.
Make sure old gasket material is out after removing old lifters
The new lifters can make a lot of noise for up to an hour when started for the first time--that's normal..

I think the others have posted most of the answers.
You need to determine if its inlet or exhaust that is ticking first though..
All I'll add on top of that is that if you want professional advice you could do worse than giving GT One in Chertsey a call.
Two questions for you now

1) where are you in Surrey,
2) got any pics of your car
