993 prices have been on the rise since the start of COVID, but these 2 WB sales this week at BAT represented explosive growth.
Million $ question is whether it is now the new norm? There is a white 37k C4S on BAT. If this one hits 6-figure also...
As an owner of a relatively low mileage WB in what I believe to be great shape, astro prices are gradually making a garage queen out of mine.

From what I see all of the air-cooled market is up. While it is nice to have a toy appreciate, truthfully there are better places if you are looking to have 50, 75 or 100K make money. I strongly believe that these cars were meant to be driven and enjoyed. I wouldn't suggest abusing or neglecting these 25 year old classics, but I am absolutely thrilled to own one that I can drive, enjoy, putter around with... I would much rather enjoy my car than have it gain a few extra dollars in value because I never drove it.

Mine is approaching 150k! Not the value but the mileage that is...lol. I intend to drive and enjoy it until the day comes when I need to sell, perhaps when my three kids are going to college..
They are still in elementary school so guess I can enjoy the car for few more years...

The prices are up on everything, not just 993’s...collector cars, motorcycles, houses in my area went up 15% last month! Everyone has gone Covid crazy. It’s a shame that 993 prices have gotten to the point where owners drive them less and less. That happened in the muscle car world between 2000 and 2008. They were slowly making their way out of garages again as prices fell over the last few years, but with auction prices up 20-30%, I’m not sure that will be the case now.

oh well, people will find alternatives that make them happy. I got into 993’s because of crazy muscle car prices. I won’t pay more than $100k for a 993...they just aren’t worth more than that to me.

Well, if that car in you avatar is YOURS, you own one that's worth more than $ 100K.

Big question is, do you speak as a current WB owner, and if so, would you practice what you preach and also sell your car for what you “think it’s worth”?

if i were a WB 993 owner who felt like the increasing price in USD made me less likely to drive my car, i'd consider selling the WB and immediately buying a NB 993.

the marginal difference in driving experience is less than the marginal difference in price in USD.

call it porsche arbitrage.

Interesting you should mention that jfischet.

I am considering selling my '98 C2S and doing that or getting back into an SC or '84-'89 Carrera.

Probably put the $60k+ into something non auto related.

Or maybe just keep the C2S. Who knows.

I was fortunate enough to get some track time in my car with other 993 owners in the early 2000's before values made that taboo. Great times!

Sadly mine is also a garage queen now. C4S with original paint & 32k miles. It's one of those "bastardized" turbo conversions though. While done right and fast as hell I realize it will need to go back to stock someday when the time comes to cash in on the car. Putting it back to stock maybe more painful than the sale.
I wasn't looking to sell, but the offer was to good to pass up. I will always love the look of a 993S. I do enjoy driving my current car every time I get behind the wheel, and don't ever worry about the value decreasing if something was to happen to it.

Are these cars going up or is the currency going down? Its the same story in anything rare. $2T printing on tap next month.

But more realistically, not really. I want to get another one so this doesn't help. I'm no expert in 993 valuation but these are inflated numbers for sure in my estimation, I am doubtful that this is the start of a long term trend. I'm not sure they are necessarily rare cars either. Since I started my honest search in December, there are numerous cars available for sale in North America any given week, yes not all 11k examples or may not be exactly the spec you want. If you are looking for that sub 15k mile car then you pay I suppose.

I was listening to Collecting Cars podcast yesterday, Edward Lovitt was talking about a Singer he sold on the platform....sold for more than he was asking when he had it listed on a non-auction site. Much more! Auction sites perhaps draw a different audience and also the process encourages overspending.

As has been said, COVID has encouraged splurging on such items by those with much money to spare. I think once things open up and the focus shifts from COVID, people will spend on other things and values will drop/settle.

This is my layman's analysis.
My search was the complete opposite, although I was looking for only a 1998 WB and ended up buying a wrecked one, I'm looking to pick up 1 more mint example and a turbo. I had a few leads on local cars and anything reasonably priced is sold immediately, there was a 98 WB at the local Porsche dealer for 90k and I reached out the same day it was posted online and it was already sold. They also had a turbo for 125k that was sold prior to me contacting them. I think this will be a sustained trend and I'm looking to pick up my other two cars as soon as I can.

Yes, the car in my avatar was mine and I sold it when it hit $100K in 2015 (actually $105K if you include the sport seats ). I've had 2 different 993's since then.

That is exactly what my thoughts are. Having owned both, there is zero difference to me when I am behind the wheel.

True, but this is not limited to 993s.
Most ANY interesting used car's value is up up up.
997.1 RSs have gone up close to $50k (~ 35%) in the last year.
Check, Supra, 240Z, s2000 and many more

Kinda miss the first half dozen years of ownership...2010 on, and how I DD’d the car. Lot’s of looks in trail head, mud lot’s, and parking lots with the relative bike on the roof. More than a few road, mountain, gravel, and cross races in those years. Used to change into/out of the cycling kit while sitting on the nose with the frunk open. Always surprised me how many people would ask...”where’s the engine?” Bought at 63 k, rolled past 122k this summer. Alas...no more bike rack on the roof. While I am certainly more aware of the current value...even on this dirty carfax, paintwork, slightly bastardized C4S...she might again see some trailhead duty this summer. After all...I ain’t getting any younger.
