Default 993 Tiptronic - what to do?

Hi All,
Here is an open question looking for some sensible ideas:
I have a really low mileage <30K 993 Tip Carrera 1994 for the last 3 years. It's a blast even without being able to really control it. Ive kind of mastered fast driving in the mountains now using the tiptronic shifting. Its not perfect but it still works kind of. One just needs to be really awake for corners and be in the right gear early. Still a hoot. Great car. But...the old question about now wanting a manual.

Selling it and I lose the benefit of its low mileage. But converting it? Does that hurt the value so much? Is it low enough in mileage to be collectable? Conversion: Cant find any parts and the cost is 20K all in. What about a 996 man. transmission? Does that fit? Apart from selling it which is what Im planning now any creative thinking is great.

There is a local guy here in Denver that got a steal on a tip C2S that he converted. You'd never know. In the end, he got a 6MT S car for a fantastic price. If I was in your position, I'd do the swap and keep the car, but I'm not a concourse original guy. One of the best things about these cars is how infinitely customizable they are.

Sell your tip and buy a three pedal 993. Converting it makes zero sense to me unless you're a hardcore DIYer and simply want a good project to work on rather than a car you can drive with minimal fuss.

Agree with above. It may have made sense for the C2S as that car is worth quite a bit but on an NB cab the numbers aren't there.

Since your car is relatively low miles you should get the higher end of the price range for that configuration.

The proceeds from the sale of the car plus the $20K you were budgeting for the swap should get you a nice 6MT NB coupe or cab.

Thanks guys. What does NB mean? I’m in Germany. Maybe buying in the US is a better idea. More cars and more choice.

Talk to Harald Jülich at ‘Grenzlandring motors’, he did most possible more conversion than anybody else.
problem nowadays is sourcing of proper manual gearbox. Prices are ridiculous....

what does anyone think or know about fitting a race manual box? Idiotic or not?

IMO, whether you're adding a shifter like a Numeric or CAE to a tip or manual trans 993, doing so is really quite extreme, especially considering how good the G50 transmission is when mated with a Fister golden rod and short shifter kit. If you're seeking the bolt-action precision of a five speed Miata, then CAE/Numeric is your path, but it's total overkill.

Thanks.

and any ideas about sharpening up a tiptronic. Make it faster and tighter. Less slushy.

the ratios I like a lot. First is useable. Second and third are all I need in the mountains. For more than 160kph it needs a fifth gear but not a fan of small 911s on autobahn at speed. Too unsteady.

but tightening up the tiptronic could be good

any ideas out there?

btw all the best from Bavaria the home of fast driving.

First thing to do is flushing the gearbox, get the right oil and fill to the RIGHT level!

If your 993 is unsteady at autobahn speeds, maybe you need a proper alignment by someone who knows how to set kinematic toe, and perhaps your car's rake needs to be adjusted so that it's slightly nose down. Lastly, are there any spoilers on the rear of the car? Adding, say, an RS spoiler to the rear without the correct RS splitters can affect the car's balance.

I had my old, bone stock 993 up to 160 MPH, and there was zero wandering. Zero.

There is a great old article from Panorama about how to "aggressively" drive a Tiptronic.

I have no personal experience with whether or not it works, but you might find it a worthwhile read;

What car is Bye driving in his scenarios? He mentions 5th gear, but the 993 Tip only has 4?

No! The European 993s are better! Pick a 993 with the G5021 gearbox! Not a US or late build European 993 with the G5020 gearbox!

And a lot more details that makes the European 993s sweeter!
