A digital gauge and a push button start would not hold me back from buying a car I really want. On a 911, they would make me less happy, but if everything else, that I prioritize a lot higher in a fun car (great engine, manual transmission, bucket seats, relatively light, exterior design, interior layout etc.), were there, I’d get in line.

Specifically on digital gauges, what I don’t like is manufacturers not rendering a complete needle to mimic a physical needle. In the 992.1 digital speedo, they render the entire needle, that only gets cut if you configure that cluster to also display navigation stuff. So, it def does not seem hard to do, and wish Porsche had done that on the .2’s digital tachometer. That would have also given it a more unique look, versus the current one that’s basically very VAG family.

So by your metric, you think the 911 should be less utilitarian sportscar and more lifestyle automotive tchotchke?
I'm guessing you didn't read the article I posted about Bugatti's new car and how its gauges look like a mechanical watch.

"Bugatti wanted to craft a cabin that would still look good 100 years from now. Did it accomplish it? The instrument cluster is a work of art, and the hide-away central screen that pops out the top of the dash should help keep the interior from feeling dated while embracing the analog feel that Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac noted supercar buyers are starting to prefer."

If you want utilitarian then get a Prius if all you want is a car to go from point A to B. I on the other hand want my 6 figure car to feel special and appeal to not just my logical brain but my passion for driving as well. Porsches for the most part don't make financial/logical sense, they are emotionally driven decisions. You can disagree with me all you want but clearly there's a market that thinks like me and clearly there's a market that thinks like you too --- no need to deride someone else's preferences --- which was my whole point. There are those that want a Rolex and those that want an Apple watch. If Porsche were smart, they'd cater to both.

Very important question, but I don’t think that question has been answered. But another question has been answered for me, to wit, should I forget about buying a new 992 and just stick with what I already own? The answer is “yes” because there is such an undercurrent of displeasure re the new 992.

I’ll get the itch again in a few months, and I’ll try and find this thread in order to inject some sanity into me again.

Now, then, which 911 should I drive today?

Mike
I have a 3.2, a 997.2 GT3, and a 992 T.

3.2 = go kart for the road. Nothing comes remotely close in feel.
997 = still raw in Carrera trim but a logical middle ground between both.
T = the rawest of the 992 Carreras and still more GT than raw sports car.

The grass is always greener.
992 is an excellent experience in the right trim.
3.2 experience is pure and irreplaceable.
I think they are the pinnacle aircooled and personally prefer them to 964s and 993s.
I would only sell a 3.2 for a better 3.2.

Maybe one day, Porsche will make the analog tach an option for $4,200.

So a Rolex is not a watch? So it doesn't tell time. I am confused by your comparison?!?!?

Yes, a Rolex tells time and some give you the date too . But they are more often worn as a permissible piece of jewelry for men, who don't otherwise wear jewelry.

Tactful and precise way of explaining this.

RWS was all the rage until S/T comes out and now it’s the purist desire to forego RWS.
I would be surprised if the GT cars will adopt this digital gauge cluster. Something tells me AP will not allow it just how he fought for keeping a normal shifter on PDK 992 GT3 and not the dumb thing on standard Carreras.

It’s knowing that you can go deep sea diving.

Same reason ppl buy Porsches, 99% will never see close to the limits of what the car can do. But we are driving something that has track pedigree and can put down a decent time on Nurburgring.

Fake news.

AP didn't fight for anything.

The 7spd PDK-S in the 992 GT3 and the 8 spd PDK in the 992 Carrera are mechanically different, and the former actually requires a physical lever to operate, whereas the latter does not.

This is the classic would you rather have an Apple Watch or Rolex (or insert luxury mechanical watch maker) debate.
My god that is atrocious and almost as hideous as the exterior of these abortions.
