The Casio watch of car gauges - terrible and plain. Fine for daily SUV but unacceptable for $150k + sports car that should make you feel something special otherwise what’s the point.

agreed. I hate digital but the real pain point is there’s zero aggression or feeling from that display. They either learn from this move or worse (and more likely) charge an obscene option to bring the gauges back.

They all look terrible and will definitely go back to analog for next generation cars. I can guarantee you for Ferrari at least.

Ferrari had a great setup on F8 Tributo with analog center tach, the new cars went all digital like 992.2 and very cheap feeling. They are hearing complaints from owners.

At least the design of those supercar dashes have an edge to them.

I like that the digital gauges are subtle in the 992.1, but that's because they're flanking the huge analog tach where the real theatre is.

Without a real tach it's just all really flat and bland. They could have done much better with the design.

Glass panel displays in aviation were met with resistance at first years ago but are the industry standard now. Most of us would likely prefer analogue at least for the central tachometer but things change and this appears to be an industry wide trend that I can accept. Unlikely that we will be going in reverse here as we will not be going bacj to mechanical gauges or ignition systems either.

From time to time I think about selling both my 1985 911 and my 2011 997.2 and using the proceeds to buy a new 992, and I saw this thread asking a question that I would like answered, to wit, how is the new 992 to drive? Very important question, but I don’t think that question has been answered. But another question has been answered for me, to wit, should I forget about buying a new 992 and just stick with what I already own? The answer is “yes” because there is such an undercurrent of displeasure re the new 992.

I’ll get the itch again in a few months, and I’ll try and find this thread in order to inject some sanity into me again.

Now, then, which 911 should I drive today?

That's a false comparison.

An Apple Watch, as the name suggest, is a watch; it's a utilitarian tool primarily used to tell time, look up info, gather health stats, etc..

A Rolex is a timepiece qua jewelry, used primarily as a fashion statement and style marker.

So by your metric, you think the 911 should be less utilitarian sportscar and more lifestyle automotive tchotchke?

I can't speak for the '85 but for what it's worth I still miss my '09 997.2 C2S manual. As nice as the 992 is in so many ways it doesn't deliver the same emotional experience as that car did.
