Default 1k oil flush (do or don't)?

I've had my 992 C4S for a short time but I'm quickly approaching 1k miles. I'm not where I heard/read that it might be a good idea to swap out the oil.

Is this a rule that should be followed or no big deal and can just wait for the 10k (1st service)?

Pretty good case in this video for 1500 miles, I would probably do 2000

First service in several regions is 20k miles. 1k miles is really overkill.

I'll just follow what the manual has for service intervals. My family has put a couple cars over 200k miles following that.

I grew up working on cars. Dad was a mechanic before moving into software. A lot of what he taught me can only be categorized as voodo, wife's tales, and outdated information. He did learn on cars from the 40s, 50s, and 60s after all.

I’ve heard about this too but really wonder if there’s any merit to it, then why doesn’t Porsche recommend it? I’m inclined to stick to the manufacturer recommendation particularly as I don’t expect to drive more than 5-6k in the first year (waiting for my 992) and I’ll try to get my first service a little sooner so maybe it’ll be closer to 4-5k.

Here is the thing - would it hurt to do it at 1K - no way, not at all, maybe it will be better.

The factory sets what they think is the yearly - which is 10K or 1 year (US). (some countries manuals it is actually more). If you are tracking or if it makes you feel better, and you plan on keeping the car for ever.. Then what the heck, first one is free and 600 or so after that (less or more depending on dealer/location). I do mine every year (which is well less than 10K and it is my daily driver, but I do mine every year.) I have friends that do their change every 1.5-2 years (if miles are not met). Many of them have their cars much longer than I do. They do not stress about it, I could care less what they do - their car and all. I do me, they do them, and I guess we all feel good about our decision.

It would not hurt to do it, may even help.. If you feel like you need to, and it reduces your anxiety - the do it for sure.

No benefit from changing oil at 1k.

And the only harm is to your pocket book, and the environment.

Yes, you should change your oil at about 1k miles or so to expel silicone. Straight from Corvette engineer's mouth:

I did the early change after a track day and I cut open the filter which was full of sparkles. The regular 1 year change showed none. So, at least it may be better for your filter, but it probably doesn't make a whole bunch of difference either way.

Porsche is a strange company when it comes to a very conservative break-in procedure but no early oil or diff fluid change.

The short story is, it is always a good idea to do an early oil change unless the car has special break-in oil (as some Honda products do or did).

But first reach out to Blackstone https://www.blackstone-labs.com
and get a few sample containers and then have your shop get a sample and then post the results here.

Of note, I just did this on my X3 with 3,000 miles. Alas the indy shop forgot to take the sample. That part is important.

Never done that on any car. Last car I sold was a 2002 VW Eurovan at 140,000 miles. Still ran smooth and burned no oil.
Regular oil changes at 5,000 miles.
(VR6 as in base Porsche Cayenne of the past).

I do a break in oil change on everything. Cars, bike, generators, lawnmowers, etc. As bearings lap themselves into place on a new engine, there will be more initial wear debris. If there was no wear debris in combustion engines then oil filters would not be universal. There's no harm in doing a break-in oil change and if you do it yourself you will familiarize yourself with your new equipment

If the extra debris is filtered out by the oil filter, what really is the harm of not doing a super early oil change? Or am I missing something?

So, I guess GM is screwing every Corvette owner, if not GM owner, by not requiring a 1k oil change?
