Default Break in period - real or myth?

I know, I know, there are a ton of posts on how to do this "right" and I don't want to rehash that. I want to know is this even a recommendation by Porsche? I can't find any mention of it in the manual and my dealer says it's good to go from day one. Can someone point me to what Porsche recommends, whether in the manual or elsewhere?

Picking my car up at the Leipzig factory, I spoke to a Porsche engineer and a former Porsche driver and they both suggested not to go over 4k rpm too often during the break in period. They continued stating getting your car up to temps gradually is more important.
Going over 4k rpm during break in from time to time is a-okay.

Personally, I don't buy in the conspiracy theory that it's all a legal/marketing ploy like some here feel. The break-in recommendations are what the Porsche engineers believe to be best for the car. They know more than anyone here regardless of what someone's friend tells them or what their mechanic tells them.

However, notice that the manual says "avoid" high engine speeds above 4,000 RPM. That's a different thing than "do not" take the engine above 4,000 RPM. To me, that speaks to common sense... take it a bit easy and don't abuse the engine out of the box but a few high speed runs where you break 4,000 RPM isn't the end of the world. I would imagine their language would be stronger if it needed to be.

I guess it all depends on how long you plan to keep the car...

In all seriousness, are the engines not factory tested? I would imagine at full power/load?

They are bench tested (at least I have read that they are) which is different than use in the car under loads (at least I have read they are). OR look at it this way: Whatever they do or don't do before installing a motor, they still specify the run-in steps in the owners manual.

the real break in period is till 5000 miles, they just tell people that its 1800 miles because boomers have no patience and their panties would get twisted if porsche told them it was 5k miles

@shrimp money Where is that screenshot from? I'm working off a hard copy manual that came with the car.

It's real if you plan on keeping your car beyond the OEM 4year/50k warranty.

It's fake, if you don't.

Your move.
