I believe it to be real and follow guidelines with new cars. As noted above, goes beyond engine to other mechanical parts also.

Having said that, watching production videos, every engine is tested in factory before being installed to ensure it meets performance - what kind of engine speeds to they run in those tests!

They run those engines up over 5,000 RPM, but only for brief periods of time as a QC check. They get them warmed up but not excessively hot. Remember, in the engine room, they can control every variable: engine temp, water temp, room temp and humidity, and engine load.

It's so easy to do the break in procedure and the consequences of not doing it are potentially so disastrous, why would anyone not do it?

It's not so easy if you drive your car 2k miles a year. Which wouldn't be too uncommon for a lot of Porsche owners. Still worth doing IMO. I'm doing it but I only have 250 miles on it after 2 wks, at this rate it will take me 4 months LOL.

In all seriousness, are the engines not factory tested? I would imagine at full power/load?

It's fake, if you don't.

Your move.
I have yet to see proof that not following the break-in procedure puts the longevity of the car at risk.

I applied a modified version of this (Weissach method) to my GTS, lowering the rev limits by 1000 rpm for each check point. Certainly didn't hurt and I'm not burning any oil. I think its more important to keep the revs down until oil temp is up. I live in a relatively warm climate and drive in Normal and keep revs below 3000 until over 160 degrees (why 160 is too convoluted to explain), 4000 until over 180. Then everything is on the menu. OBTW, PDK 8th gear gives about 125mph at 3000 RPM.

Why are people debating what is on page 16 of our manuals? If you want to ignore the advice because it "infringes" on your enjoyment, by all means, go ahead. I have about 800 miles and I know that there is what someone else described as the "fun zone" on the other side of 1800 miles. I'm not a lemming if I listen to the manufacturer's recommendation. This topic is a fascinating insight into human behavior....and privilege.
