Default Targa 4S Uninsurable?

My 2023 Targa 4S is on the boat. I should be getting it during the 2nd week of January. It will be registered in New York State. I contacted my insurance agency to give them some information in anticipation of the car's arrival. My insurance is currently through Traveler's. The agency told me that their underwriter is away for a few days so they will only know, when the underwriter gets back, as to whether they can insure my car. They said that, because the car cost over $150,000 (my build costs considerably more than that) and is a sports car, they may not be able to insure it. I was really shocked to hear that. Has anyone had any similar issues insuring their 911's? What do you do if you can't get insurance for your car?

Nope. 911s are easy and common place. You may need a better insurance carrier. Or be older, fatter and less risky a driver. Or have a longer business relationship / history with your insurance company

That's strange.

I'm in NYC and my 992 C4S with an MSRP well over $150k was no problem to insure with Geico. I've been with them for 17 years now and have had good experiences with my few claims.

State Farm will insure anything. Including "exotics".

No problems with USAA, but while the MSRP of my build was over $150K, that's not what I paid. FWIW, this was just before the market went Cuckoo.

I used to have Traveler’s and they insured a Turbo S

Every state and situation is different, but I’d be shocked if they didn’t insure a Targa.

I picked up my 2023 C4 GTS on December 13th, and before that I had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get coverage. I tried Farmers, Geico, and Hagerty (with whom I have coverage for my 2022 Panamera Turbo S). This was around the middle of November and at the time, none of the three had the car in their system. Farmers and Geico turned into a fiasco just trying to get a quote. Ultimately, Hagerty had to send it to their underwriters for them to work up a quote, and that's who I went with; and I covered it for either $200K or $210K. Can't remember which. Once it all got worked out, I'm happy with Hagerty, even if it's on the expensive side. Every time there's a hurricane they jack the rates up. For my regular cars, I get coverage through Costco and they beat everyone's prices by a mile. Can't say enough good things about them, but they won't cover cars worth over $100K if I remember right. I wish they did.

P.s. if you're a PCA Member be sure to mention that when talking about available discounts cause it should help. Good luck.

Try Porsche Auto Insurance. They cover agreed values at very good rates.

Took me less than 15 mins to get my 4 GTS coupe sorted with their customer service folks. Perhaps they can do the same for Targas.

We're with Cincinnati now but I never had a problem with State either with cars over $150K. My 991.2 Targa 4S (which was over $150K in 2016) didn't cause any drama from my agent at the time.

Sometimes the agent will say something like they aren’t sure if they can insure it because they personally haven’t for a car like that and then underwriting comes back no problem. So travelers may have no issues.

When I insured my current Targa GTS I tried first with Allstate as we had them at the time, the rep told me something similar but then they came back with pricing to insure it. When I got mine they were having a hard time finding the GTS and originally quoted it under 4S since the cars had just arrived.

I used Erie insurance for business purposes and called them because the cost to insure the new car was excessive with Allstate. I ended up increasing my coverage on all my cars and switched the house over and saved $2K over the Allstate quote. So if you can get Erie in your area I’d give them a call.

Sticker on my 21 Targa 4S was $165k and insured through USAA just like any car. I didn’t have to jump through any hoops.

Yes, same problem with Progressive... Flo told me $150K maximum.

Ran into this exact problem w/my G550 a few months ago and made sure I was under that magic number with the 911.
