For example, I plan on taking a bucket and car wash detergent to wash off bugs, etc., and probably some tools. What do you (or anyone else) recommend to take with you on these long distance trips?
A larger more luxurious car and a credit card. 😁😁😁

There is a big difference between a cross country trip and a cross country camping trip. I am not sure I would want to do the former in a 911, but definitely would not want to do the later.

It sure did. 50,000 miles and it always does. Must change the plugs.
I dont like cold starts on it, it usually lives inside! Seems to be just fine though.

I lived just outside of Stratford-upon-Avon for a while in '81-82 which was a pretty cold winter, had a '76 Alfa which lived outside. When it started on cold mornings you'd get 1 or 2 cylinders then slowly it'd fire on all 4. Never let me down but how cars have changed!

None of my cars have a block heater other than my skid steer which is diesel and does have one. VDub guarantees a start to -50F. We had -56F one year when we went out for dinner, came out and the V6 Treg started with no problem. Excellence wasn't only expected then it continues to be delivered. No issues with the Macan or 992 but we haven't had such temps lately - more like -30F

For reference, 2009, our thermometer didn't go any lower... No battery blanket, no engine block or oil pan heater. A regular wet cell battery with no BMS
