Can somebody please advise? I have no clue.
For sure I have the illuminated ones on my Targa 4GTS but I have never seen them illuminated (not in day light and not at night, nor when I break). There must be a way I'm sure?

I’m puzzled trying to get mine to activate. Hard braking? Nope! With the brights on? Nope! With the rear fog light on? Nope!

I guess the most logical answer would be they illuminate when the entire led bar lights on at dusk/eve. But this is not the case for me 100%.

On my TTS the gills light up whenever the brake lights illuminate. Whether in forward or reverse and whenever the turn signals flash. I confirmed this at night time with the headlights on. I think a lot of the confusion is due to the illumination of the gills being visible from a limited range of viewing angles. From directly behind the car, you can't really see the gills light up. Looking straight at the gills from the side of the car, you can see it fully light up. In between, the illumination is partially visible based on the parts of the gill that fall within the appropriate viewing angle.

The gills light up whenever the brake lights illuminate or turn signals are on. Meaningless feature IMO. I don't notice them.

Illuminated lateral gills on taillights: $170 option.
I actually think it’s pretty nice and worth it.

Quick update on this topic: my 23 Targa originally came with the standard red tail lights, lacking the gills. I recently purchased the exclusive tail lights from the dealership and have just swapped them out. Initially, my installer was uncertain if it was necessary to switch the sides, given that the most noticeable difference was the clear middle light (referred to as "the bacon"). However, after observing that the part numbers were different from those of the original red lights, we opted to replace all three lights (left, right, and middle). Upon starting the car, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the lateral gills activated during braking or signaling. It's actually very nice.

Here's a video to show you what I mean:
