What discount should I ask for for a custom 992 order?
Looking to order a custom build 2021 992, ETA delivery by July. Most dealers told me the allocation is very limited so they won't offer any discount.
Is this true? What would be a realistic discount to negotiate for?
This is in the US.

If you want a custom ordered C2S that arrives THIS year, you are going to pay. As of right now, there are VERY FEW 2021 C2S allocations left and if you even find one, it will be MSRP. Call it the Covid premium. I know, because I just went through the process.

No microchips = no discounts

Anything less than 100% is a "walk away" for me. They should be showering you with cash and accessories... I kid.
I always shoot for 8-12%, and they always tell you that's impossible... But this time around they might not be BSing.
Try calling Huntsville Porsche or some other low volume, slow selling 911 dealership that's located in a small market.

What about a C4S? So you paid the MSRP?

Facts about Covid and 992s.
1. This time last year we had no idea what was going to happen. Everyone was scared and sales pretty much stopped.
2. It became easier to get a discount because of lack of demand for a short while, and uncertainty and that production wasn't really impacted yet.
3. During the latter half of 2020 and Q1 2021 allocations became scarce mainly because of two important factors.
4. The market rebounded pretty well and people were making money again.
5. But people still weren't travelling and going out because of Covid shutdowns, so a natural place for all that disposable cash -> new cars.
6. Add to that that production has slowed a bit, and there is more demand and less supply. So allocations are hard to find and discounts are almost impossible save for existing relationships where a dealer takes care of repeat customers.

There are discounts to be had.
You just have to do legwork and call/email around to find dealers out of your geographic region. Some do still have open allocations.
Bottom line. Discounts can be had but you have to (1) do your research by contacting dealers nationally and (2) be willing to buy remotely.
Good luck.

Yes, paid MSRP. And I am no fool. Be careful about a lot of the advice here - they are not familiar with TODAY'S market. Timing has everything to do with it. My original order was a 7% discount back in early October 2020, but the dealer never got an actual allocation. I had to start over to find a car. All this talk about going out of state to get a lousy 2% discount? Well, then you need to arrange shipping, so that's $1K at least, and often getting the car registered is a problem. Here in New Jersey, you need an appointment at the DMV - good luck with that. My experience is the C4S is also very difficult to source. In the end, I simply did not want to wait until 2022 to drive my first 911. And for what I'm paying, I'm not buying a car off the lot that doesn't have my options and is painted grey or black.

I've always gotten a discount on off-the-lot cars - 5% isn't too hard to negotiate, and I've even gotten 8% - 9% before (not on 911s, but on a Macan and a Panamera).
For my three previous custom orders, I've paid MSRP. Could I have gotten a discount? Maybe, but I didn't try.
The cynic in me makes me think that given their supply of allocations that dealers will rank their orders by how much $ they'll make and perhaps even how "weird" a spec is - a "normal" spec might be more likely to get a discount than a wildly personalized color combo (if you walk, they probably won't want a McDonald's themed Christmas tree sitting on the lot).
If allocations are scarce, that cynical side of me would even think it would help to jack up the MSRP with options to make the order more attractive. They like you to think there's a "list" of people that get allocations in first-come-first-served order, but no one ever actually sees that list but the dealer - they have no incentive to assign allocations in that order, and if they were agreeing to a 7% discount I'm not surprised that they couldn't find an allocation to assign you if they had another customer anywhere on that list with an optioned to the roof spec at MSRP.
If you're looking for a deal - right now is probably not optimal timing.
