Default Ok all you EuroDelivery Superstars.... lets talk 992 timing

I think I've finally broken down and realized that I need a Targa in my life. Still wonder if I'd enjoy the 718 spyder just as much, but there is something about the targa that I've loved ever since the 991 hit. So I'm starting to talk to dealers about allocations and they are a bit hard to come by right now which may or may not be a problem. I'm #3 on the list at a dealer that is a very high volume dealer so he thinks I should get an allocation relatively soon but unclear when. I'm in Los Angeles so I have plenty of dealers around I can start calling. Couple of questions:

1- I've done another euro pick up (for an F80 M3) the first week of October and found that the perfect time to be driving and visiting Bavaria. Late sept/early oct (for Oktoberfest) is the better part of 8 months away right now. If I wanted to go then, working backwards, when would I need to secure an allocation for the car? For example if I find an allocation by end of March does 6 months get the car built on time?

2- Do people have a preference between Zuffenhausen and Leipzig for delivery? Similar experiences or (other than starting point of trip) are there pros/cons to each that I should be aware of?

3- I know the euro delivery program isn't a favorite of US dealers but if I'm already accepting that I'm likely going to be paying full MSRP for the car should I expect blow back from dealers?

4- Basically impossible to get my wife to pack light... for any 992 owners I'm assuming there's plenty of room for full size luggage if you fold down the rear seats right?

Thanks

I wouldn't count on being able to do a European Delivery in Fall 2021. Non-locals flying into Germany to pick up a vehicle and go country-hopping will be just about the last thing that will revert back to "normal" once COVID is well and truly under control. We've pushed our planning for ED of a 718 at Zuffenhausen (our April 2020 992 Zuffenhausen pickup got cancelled and we took delivery at our local dealer) out to Spring 2022, and not holding our breath it will be possible even then.

This. I had an ED scheduled last June. Porsche kept saying they’d be fine with it but travel restrictions made it totally impractical and nothing has really changed since. Maybe a one-country trip would work but even then. They have real issues with COVID at the moment and no sign they’re close to getting that under control any time soon.

I would work under the presumption that while 2021 will experience a return to some level of normalcy in the states, that will not be true for elsewhere in the world. International travel isn’t going to be normalized until at least some time in 2022. ED for American buyers isn’t happening for a while.

I do a lot of conference speaking and almost everything of substance has already been kicked to 2022. Travel, and for that matter “normal”, are going to take time.

Will be 2022 at the earliest. They are expecting 5-7 years of COVID and all its variants so could be later. Only time will tell.

That will give states like NY and CA lots of excuses.

Sure hope they don’t scrap it completely. I’ve always wanted to do ED but had to have it cancelled last May for my 992.
