Hi Guys I have just joined this forum so a big Hello!
is the S version really necessary over the standard Carrera or Carrera 4 given the ever increasingly speed restrictions on everyday roads?

If you want a Limited Slip Differential, Bigger/better brakes, Manual Transmission or other performance options like Rear Axle Steering, the S is your choice.
If those things don’t matter to you and the Porsche badge on a 911 is enough, the Base is plenty fast for public roads and certainly quick.

Welcome.
You will read varying opinions and many of the “professional” reviews say the base is plenty of car. However, speed and power cannot be underestimated and the reviews of the S have been just as glowing. Personally, I don’t think one can be told what’s enough for them, that’s really a self made decision. Is a Porsche really necessary?![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I opted for the Base and it’s amazing. No regrets. That said, I don’t think anyone ever regrets having more power and speed, either.

I have heard similar and many reviews done by professionals say the base is good daily driver .
I was debating to get S but stayed with base .
It's going to be upto you. Drive them both

Welcome to the board; I think you find it very informative and helpful.
You need to look at budget considerations, daily driver vs ?. are you looking for specific options that only come on the S model? And as most will tell you, you just need to drive each one to see what works best overall for you.

I placed my order last month for a Base Carrera. I was in the same boat as you. I don't believe there is a wrong answer...maybe invest in the Carrera 4 if you live in wintry weather but other than that the Base Carrera is a beast. 0-60 in 3.8 seconds with the Sport Chrono and a great driver's car. You may get a little more "value" with the Carrera S because of the wheels and certain factory options are cheaper...but you can easily save $15,000 going with the Base which maybe means that is the best "value".

I got a heavily loaded S (mid life crisis). Frankly - it’s too much for daily for me, but I wanted to experience rear axle steering/PDCC which were not available on the base, and the S had always been a childhood obsession of mine.
I’m dreaming of a base now, with fewer options, that I can just beat on daily and not consider it as “special” as my S. But I may never downgrade.

I think perhaps the word “base” sells this $100k twin turbo rocket that can hum along on the autobahn all day at something that rounds to 180mph a bit short.
As an aside, I happen to be reading the great account of the 959’s development in Ludvigsen’s epic “excellence was expected”, and aside from both the 959 and today’s Carrera being twin turbo of course, it’s interesting that the PDK was part of the original 959 plan, but it wouldn’t be ready and thus it ended up 6MT... so the 959 team would I suppose tip their hat to the current carrera’s standard PDK.

The Base term can be very misleading. The car is sub 4 second 0-60 machine that tops out at 182 MPH. The 992 Base is my first Porsche and I drive it every day, rain, or shine and I never feel like its not enough. If you push it moderately, you're at risk of going to jail. Drive it first and see for yourself.
Worth every penny.

If they offered a C2 with manual transmission, I would have another. The C2 is a wonderful car and a bargain compared to what else is out there.
The word “base” should always be replaced with “C2”, IMO.

The big one for me is no sport suspension on the base car. Seems like all the rave reviews for the S cars were with sports suspension.
