Default Opinions from First time Porsche Owners

I will kick things off with my lengthy review, (completely random observations in point form) of my 3 day old C2S.
Options:
Sports Exhaust /
PCCB /
Alcantara GT Wheel and Roof Lining /
Exclusive Design Wheels in Matt Black /
Wood grain Interior trim /
SD front Apron /
Glass Sunroof /
Tint /
Sport Chrono /
Park Assist /
18 Way seats.
Car is finished in GT Silver.
  • Porsche really know their stuff. This car is as close to perfection as I have come across. (previous history with RS Audi models and AMG Mercedes)
  • People complaining about a "disconnected" feel or lacking in "feel" should check their options list. I purposely left out rear wheel steering, steer assist, Leather Options, Stereo Upgrade and anything that was going to add weight and or "assistance" in order to get something as basic as current laws allow. Result? Pure driving heaven imo.
  • If the sound difference between Exhaust mode on and off is the actual difference a non PSE car would sound like, then definitely option the PSE. I'm in Australia, so thank God, no particulate filter for us in this model. Gen 2 is believed to be locked in with the filter for both Australia and the US. Or at least so I've been told.
  • I often watch videos by Harry's Garage and generally appreciate his views. I can not however get my head around the interior cabin road noise levels he was reporting in his review?? Yes different road surfaces produce varying levels of noise, but after 300km on several different surfaces, I am yet to experience anything even remotely comparable to what he was describing in his video? 90% of the driving I have done has been phenomenally quiet and comfortable all things considered.
  • Interior of the 992 is a thing of beauty. Everything "feels" just right and snug. This leads me to the much discussed "obscured outer gauges". YES, the steering wheel covers the outer gauges. Not just a little bit, not just from some angles, but actually covers them good and proper. However, at no point have I felt that I'm missing something, or I'm desperate to keep looking behind there. Revs and speed in the center, and that's all you need. The problem Porsche faced in the design issue here was a significant one, but ultimately, they made the RIGHT decision to leave it as it is. In a static state, and when being presented with the interior upon entering the car, everything is imo perfectly proportioned. The right size climate vents, with the right sized screens, with the right sized dash etc. Seating position in relation to steering wheel is wonderful. Steering wheel size is again, perfect. Obviously this is personal taste, but for me, I would rather have Porsche sack me as a designer on the spot, than agree to mess with the interior harmony for the sake of the outer gauge visibility.
  • While discussing the interior, might as well add my 2 cents on the "nubbin". It looks perfectly fine imo, suits the interior theme well, and works with a decent feedback and spring rate. HOWEVER, this is probably going to be my biggest issue with this new 911 model. Personally, I would love to be able to shift without having to use the paddles, via a more traditional stick located where God intended gear shifts to be made from...... the center console!
  • Door handles look fantastic, compliment the overall aesthetics, but simply do not work well. Sometimes they pop out, sometimes they don't, sometimes they take forever to retract.... just all over the place. I find myself just ignoring the mood they are in and wedging my fingers under and opening the door. More an annoyance than a problem.
  • Standard Bose stereo is great. Perhaps too great? At loud levels and with plenty of base, rattles emit from inside the door as opposed to actual speaker distortion. I can't see the need to be upgrading the actual sound system.
  • 18 way seats are sublime. If one can't adjust these into a position that suits the particular driving they are doing, then perhaps a good look at their own body dimensions is more the appropriate fix for this?
  • Overall visibility from this car is fantastic.
  • Power in the S car is plenty. Period. Am really keen to test drive the base model and see if that's suffice. If so, potential to save some $$ for those in the market
  • PDK. Best in class. Real witchcraft going on within this thing. Brilliant
Conclusion?
Lets put it this way. If I was the CEO of Porsche, and the engineers and designers presented me with this car, this is what I would tell them:
Amazing work. Now go away and : Fix the door handles, replace the rear deck lid with a light weight aluminium variant, replace the piano finish center console trim with a "matt" finish alternative, replace the nubbin with a proper shifter that allows shifting, find a couple more decibels out of the PSE, and make sure every car sold comes with a spare front spoiler lip included in the sale (already hammered mine)! Achieve the above, and we are pretty much perfect imo

I’d like to see Porsche replace the nubbin with buttons... like every other serious modern performance car. I just don’t get the appeal of a big gear change lever. For manual gear changes, paddles are superior and keep your hands where they should be during spirited driving. It’s not like we are talking about Tiptronic era steering wheel buttons.

I do appreciate the retractable handles. They clean up the side of the car and help with aero — look at where they line up with the wide hips of the 992. The Taycan has them too for the same reason.

I get quite a few compliments, from other Porsche owners, regarding the PSE exhaust note of my 992 C4S. It sounds full-on decent on the boil — IMHO, substantially better than the 991.2 cars. Unfortunately, with particulate filters coming to all 911 markets, I wouldn’t hold out hope that the cars are going to get any louder.

There are aspects of the car that could be more intuitive to non techies, ie. Homelink setup. The steering wheel phone button appears to be useless for CarPlay users. Not showstoppers, but an area of software improvement.

Nearly 6000 miles into it, I don’t have the rattle issues, etc that others have reported. My car is an early, double diamond button build, that arrived for PDI in the last week of September 2019.

It is the first Porsche that I have owned, but I had been lucky enough to spend time with various trims of the 996, 997, and the 991.

The car that pushed me to finally get a 911 of my own was actually a 997 Carrera S that I drove up the coast from San Diego to Los Angeles. Over several hundred miles, I got explore some great driving roads. It was such a good time that, when I got home, I couldn’t get it out of my head. I briefly considered a 991 TTS, but then decided on a 992 C4S. I popped into our local Porsche dealer and put a deposit down on a 992 C4S allocation in December 2018. The wait was worth it. 👍

PASM -10 mm standard
Sport PASM -20 mm is an option in the C2S and C4S. Not available in C2 or C4.

Great review. The nubbin looks fine and engages fine but it is just not intuitive to look down to find the M button to go Full manual or get out of full manual mode. The previous PDK lever was so easy to flick to left for manual and flick back to right for D mode without looking down to find the M button

Early 992s with Sport Chrono and PSE have two user definable “diamond” switches in the center console. Later builds have a one user definable switch and an exhaust toggle.

Am I crazy in thinking it’s better to have programmable buttons? I only have 1 diamond, but I have dedicated PSE and PDCC buttons.

as a new owner and first time new buyer, I fully agree with this review... this car is a winner, all around.
