The Porsche 992 Aftermarket Wheel Thread
#436
@Tobeit thank you for bringing this up. It's not difficult to figure out the best possible fit for any given car. It just takes a bit of time and homework. Knowing that a wheel dealer has that information but won't share it unless a purchase is secured completely turns me off from buying anything from them. It's arrogant and pompous over something that is not a trade secret and is available to anyone. It never fails to amaze me how people's egos get in their own way of doing business and making money.
I recently attempted to get a set of custom made wheels for my GT3 that required a minimum of five sets to place an order. I created a thread on the GT3 forum to solicit others who might be interested in buying one of those sets. This vendor proceeded to question the quality of the wheels when in fact they use the exact same quality standards than the likes of BBS and HRE. Again, it blows my mind how people do the exact opposite of what they should do in order to build a business. Here's the link for those who want a fun read: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...with-pics.html

On a last note, and I probably offend a lot of people here...I am really over the standard split 5 design and black wheels. I see raves about versions of single piece, split 5 HRE's and other top brands here and always wonder why they are so appealing. You see them on almost every other car nowadays and after looking at them for a while they all look the same no matter how much "detail" some manufacturers put on them. Its a classic design but if I want a custom wheel, I also want a custom look. Hope I don't get killed for my opinion.

I will never buy HRE wheels again. It's become too much. I get they're doing what all these premium brands are doing and I get it. But there are many viable options now that the only reason to buy them would be because of brand recognition.
I really wanted the 300 classic FMR. Go out to vendor. Here's the price. Let's do it. Want the super premium plus exclusive color. $2k more. Fine. Want black hardware on the multpiece. $400 more. Ok. Oh. You want custom offsets because you want to be more aggressive than the standard 20x9 et45 and 21x11.5 et58, we won't. Ok. We will. $1k more. I'm out. "Custom wheels engineered for maximum performance and refined style." 💩 Thanks for wasting two weeks of my time.

Exactly right, Eric @SupremePower got my business for those exact reasons.
This is what makes buying super expensive wheels a PITA sometimes. Some vendors will want to talk to you instead of just giving you a price, or push you or some sort of commitment. Well, how can I make a $15K decision without knowing all the details first? I asked one vendor (not WB) 3x what's the price and they kept giving me MSRP pricing and said they would give me a deal or just ballparked some numbers. So I asked what's that actual deal and could never get a straight answer. However, every time I've spoken w/ Eric or Kim at @SupremePower , they straight up tell you or email you immediately here's retail, here's what discount we can give, here's approximate wait times, no BS, just straight up clear explanations. After going back and forth with another vendor for a couple of weeks and never getting a straight answer on price, I ended up buying rims from Supreme Power after a couple of emails b/c they didn't waste my time. We are talking about $10K to $15K+ rims. We are all adults and business people. We are not kicking tires. We are ready to buy and don't have time to F around. I appreciated that Eric respected my time and was very transparent with pricing, offsets, etc. Did I get the best deal? I have no idea b/c the other vendor never gave me a price. But it doesn't matter b/c Eric didn't make me jump through hoops just to get a straight answer and he actually calls or texts me updates on what's going on with my order.

Oh, thanks for the thread link. Mhm. I have Titan T's on one of my other cars and those are light, can take some abuse, and made to fit the car very well (yep, they make special fitment for certain cars). Never had an issue, never got a bend, never had surface issues or whatever issues a "cheap forged wheel" is implied to have. I have 2 pc BCforged on the 992, before another set on my AMG for years and again never had an issue, run over bad potholes w/o issue etc. The only disadvantage is that BCforged multipiece are about 2lbs heavier than similar design and same spec HRE (you could argue 2lbs makes them stronger as they use the same grade aluminum). I measured it. But for my cruiser that is perfectly fine and if you really want lowest weight you go with single piece/mono block anyway. For my use that was not my goal and I wanted some more details, 2 color scheme etc. Another car of mine has Rays/Volk Racing and again, always very good experience but too JDM'ish to put on the 992. I love some of the MVforged and AL13 aero designs with CF barrel but just can't justify those for my use. But that response in that thread was just...well, sh..tty.

Asking about offsets, which can be measured with a sample available, is NOT a trade secret. It’s not like you are going to get a CNC machine, forge your own alloys and the only thing keeping you from doing it, are the offsets.
His clientele is flashy and would disapprove unless they were buying the most expensive thing out there. ‘My dealer’s offsets are a secret’ is probably equivalent to ‘my cigars are rolled by Cuban virgins’ to some.
Kudos to David for knowing his customers so well.

I wrote the same thing once about the split 5 design and @minn19 had a few choice words for me.

Actually, I totally get your POV. And, THIS time I said I was going to get something edgier...and ended up going with classic looking 10 spoke P104SCs...although not in black. Lol.
I'm completely over black wheels which is one major reason why I'm getting aftermarket wheels and putting winter tires on the OEM GTS wheels.

IIRC, I think you said it in a much more different way and/or I could’ve been having a pretty bad day. I generally don’t comment on people’s design or color choices. I feel it is pointless as it is personal/subjective and only leads to the same needless arguments that get regurgitated over and over on car forums. I’m not perfect, but I’ve resisted commenting on a certain color that is all the rage lately here that I can’t stand. There are plenty of wheels in here I can’t believe people paid for, but who cares what my opinion or what other’s opinions are on it. That person liked that color or that design and it is their money so that is all that matters.

My GTS is Agate Grey with black Spyder wheels as I didn’t want the center locks. Then I got dark blue Vossen split five spoke wheels for my summer street set. I’ll use the Spyders for the winter set. I know a lot of people will find it a boring/overdone build, but I love the darker and IMO understated look.

There is a recent thread/poll on the color, I voted but I don’t think I commented.

I get it, we are human, he is right though, for some reason the way you said it didn’t bother me nearly as much as the way he said it.
