Random thought.... I've been thinking a lot about how the 992 ended up as such a design mess. I think the main reason is that unlike the 996 to 997, where there were several major design issues to correct, the Porsche design team had almost nowhere to go with the 991 to 992 and really struggled to make changes while being limited to the same chassis. This was the basis for the needless "change for the sake of change" style direction the car is plagued with and also furthered the merge of all the SUV and Panamera elements as well....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder albeit, but I think that 992 is more elegant than 991 (and I have both a 991.1 and a 991.2).

I keep going back to the dash. I was so excited about the cockpit style of the 991 when it came. We were all excited to see it make it to the 911. Now the 992 is back to the detached look. Reminds me of a spitfire I drove in high school. Not for me.

I think they nailed it with the side profile.. Which is the part that looks most 991ish.

The front can be fixed I'm sure with a Turbo or GT trim. The rear needs a lot of work but the aerokit cup wing is nice IMO.

Totally agree. Looks "sedan like". One would totally think it was a BMW if it had the logo on the steering wheel.

All Porsche had to do was look to the design of the Mission E concept for the clean, flowing lines and simple elegance of it. Porsche could have moved the 992 into the future with a clean, sleek modern interpretation of the 911. Instead they made a bulbous, busy mess with no cohesion at all. Slap on some fender flares and almost dubs in the back, mix square and round design cues up front, and throw in an interior with lines from a 1986 Buick Regal. I have no problem at all with the 911 evolving and getting more modern. Just make it look good when you do it. The new car is a mess and a total miss in terms of moving the design forward into the future.

I will credit Archimedes with "The Clam". I believe he was the first to label it as such unless someone has an earlier claim to it.

I think the fatal mistake was not starting with a clean slate. They took the 991 and chopped it up with retro throwback influences. The 911 has evolved and each generation moving forward. They decided to hit the rewind button looking for some oldies but goodies.

Like they were trying to make a "BEST OF" 911 and failed.

For me that new center console is ridiculous, it's needlessly wide , houses next to nothing other than disgusting fingerprint magnet piano black panels and a cup holder more at home in a Chevy.

I totally get the ergonomic aspects of having that wrap around feel but DO NOT get why the console needs to be so wide and transmission tunnel like in a car that has nothing under there. Seems like a huge waste of precious interior space to me.

Also, as far as the rear end goes : Did anyone catch the " Easter Egg" thread ( that got totally out of shape and peoples feelings got hurt) where it's suspected that the engine cover grill slats and brake light are arranged to display 9-9-2 or 9-11?

Part of my now deleted response to that was : If this is true and not just a coincidence, it amazes me that a design department with THAT much attention to detail could screw up so badly with everything else. If they put half the effort of the grille slats displaying 9-9-2 / 9-11 into that horrid brake light design for example, I'd imagine it would have come out much nicer.

I also laugh about that stupid brake light supposedly being a "pause" symbol because I highly doubt that was the intention but rather a scramble from the marketing department to say something positive about that blunder.

I think even that's been overhyped. I have a '74 and I'm all over the G-body aircooleds. To me those throwback influences are so subtle I can't really see them unless they're pointed out to me.

I think at this point, they're grasping on anything they can. Even writing books on the 992 design.

What happened to that book thread? Hmmmmmm .... he never lets up
