Manual Transmission Feedback
#76
My experience coming from a 991.2 GT3 PDK to the 992 GT3 manual is that there is no question the PDK is easier to drive, making it easier to drive hard and explore the rev range.
The manual has its pluses in the obvious areas, but something that surprised me is the way that auto blip and no lift shift make the manual feel a lot like driving a PDK. The no lift shifts even make the same up shift bang sounds.
I’ve owned alot of cars considered to have awesome manual transmissions and I’d say that this manual is up there among the best. I track as well, and I think you’ll be fine with a manual on track. If you get paid for lap times, then sure choose the PDK so you can better focus on lines and braking but otherwise the manual is fine. As far as the lighter flywheel, admittedly I stalled this car the first couple days but once I adjusted it’s been fine.
I agree with the previous comment. You have to know that you want a manual to choose it. The PDK is so good that choosing the manual is a conscious choice for older tech and overall a marginally slower car. For me, I jumped from 991.2 to 992 to get into the manual and I would absolutely do it again. I thought I’d miss some of the character the PDK offers, but the auto blips and no lift shift adds some of that to the manual.
This might be our last chance to have an old school driving experience with 500 hp, and 9K rpm NA. You will know if that appeals to you. For everyone else, there’s the PDK.

I am so happy to have the manual for myself, but equally understand why someone else would choose PDK.

Currently in a 2020 C4S with PDK. Got to drive the CS and TTS at Barber - both with PDK. The PDK is unbelievable - it is better than the driver - I’ll wager that’s true for more than 99% of drivers. To paraphrase what others have said, it feels telepathic, but it’s all just science.
This said, my GT3 is configured with the manual. I want the extra theater of it, and believe we’re probably looking at the last naturally aspirated manual 911.
Both rock, for different reasons.

After driving the MY on track, I’ll add that the MT requires a little nerve shifting at 8800 rpm. Aside from holding the steering wheel with one hand going 130+, this car can have a little torque kick when shifting, especially if the road is the least bit damp.
As responsive as the steering is, you need to be smooth on the wheel, gas, and clutch. Some may not enjoy that too much.
Also, even though the car has flat shifting, I only used it in the straights as it is a little temperamental (I found) in other areas of the track. I think you can be smoother with a slight lift. The flat shift (for me) tends to have a little more of a pop. Could just be my driving style tho.

All the issues you guys raise are positives for me. Thats why its fun because its not easy to get it right. You dont get paid for lap times you do pay for the car to make you smile.

991.1 GT3 PDK was funny, this 992 pdk is too civilised to be defined funny,
easy yes, more reliable too, but not funny,
unless you go often on track for time attack why one should bother for pdk?
Get a Manual and learn how to, how you can, unsettle the car,
there are driving school for that if your teenager' life wouldn't help you,
or did you finish the money to get the pts ?

This. I'm a little rusty on the 4-5 shift. The auto blip starts going a little crazy thinking I'm going to 3rd if don't hit 4th just right. Only 150 miles so hopefully linkages and such will start breaking in as will my technique.

For my order, my dealer is suggesting combining the PDK with the LWBS or the MT with the 18-ways.... thoughts? Seems kinda nonsense to me. I really prefer the look of the LWBS and want the MT for engagement. It is a Winged GT3, non-track.
