Does anybody know what the little black string is for?
The black string is there so you can slide the fob out just far enough from the leather sleeve to reach the panic button on the back side of the key. Unsnap the leather strap and you can pull the key out far enough to reach the emergency key if your battery goes flat.

I'm a little late to the party on this thread, but I believe the larger ring is to attach the key for vehicles equipped with E&D where the key just stays in the pouch 99% of the time but can still extend just far enough to access the buttons on the key if you need to.
The string attachment is for cars without E&D as it allows the key to extend from the pouch enough to be used in the ignition and the pouch can hang down below it.
That's my theory anyway.
Don't want to be offensive but something wrong with you lot and these first world issues.
Ain't it the truth. Nobody sees my key remote but me. I have 2 different Porsches, 2 different fobs to tell them apart. Goes in my pocket in the morning, into a hiding spot in the garage at night. I have no idea if they are getting beat up or not, I never look at them.
Yep. Depends on insurance company when above a certain value. Then in addition to insurance premium, you pay £235pa to vodaphone for monitoring that whenever your car moves, the tracking fob is with it. Hence why you shouldn't really attach the fob to the key. You can get insurance without but then premium higher.
