My current build on a 991.2 Carrera 4s is somewhere around $147k (before discount)

If I were to build out a 991.2 Turbo, I would probably get it at ~$162k (before discount)

After discounts, the delta is ~$14k. I'm starting to think that the Turbo is, in a weird way, a better value -- at least in this example...

I'd like to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

It all depends on your build.

You can build a C4S that has more seat of the pants "character" and 4/5ths the performance of a base Turbo.

What you don't get with it is the look and the other 5th.

That's why they make each!

$147k is really really heavily optioned C4s. Money aside, if the Turbo has most of the options you want, then it would make sense to go for that. $14k is under 10% on total value of car....which is not much but Turbo > C4s......since all 911s are turbo now.

The best 0-60 time I've seen for the C4S is "only" 3.1, with PDK and Sport Chrono.

I had the same dilemma with my recent order (the difference in price was more in my case but close enough to consider the 991.2 turbo). In the end I decided to go with a heavily optioned C4S bc I actually prefer the look of the C4S to the 991.2 Turbo (more pure lines without the spoiler etc). As a side note, I also heard that the insurance premiums and deductibles are much higher with a turbo (TT).....although I did not confirm this with my own insurance company). Also, the 991.2 turbo may be better for resale down the road (my SA said it would retain more of its value) for what that's worth.

In the end I think it is best to decide which car you really want (costs aside) and go with that rather than a decision based primarily on economics. If you will be thinking "I should have bought the turbo" after buying a C4S I would go for the turbo. Just my 2 cents....

That's a tough one. I had similar dilemma. My Targa 4S build was $16k away from what my theoretical Turbo build would come to. For me my decision was easier though, because having had a cab, I wanted to switch into a Targa, so that's what I went with. But in the back of my mind while waiting, I was wondering if I made a mistake. I was coming from a 997.2 TT, so I was use to the extreme boost of the TT and didn't want to be disappointed with the (lowercase) tt. I would tell you that the 991.2 4S is extremely fast, has a lot of torque, and while the TT obviously accelerates harder, I don't think you will ever feel the 4S is not fast enough (unless you track the car). I also like the linearity of the power delivery in the 991.2 4S vs my old TT.

(Comparing looks, resale, etc are variables you may or may not care to include in this decision.)

If spending anything north of $140K on a Carrera S, makes sense to go for big brother Turbo. No doubt about it. Will also be much better with depreciation too. You have to consider that too. The .2 Turbo is being more closely watched with production #'s too. You won't see the discounting like the .1's.

A reasonable S build would be $130K MAX.

You will lose the extra $14K you'd pay for a Turbo in extra depreciation alone on the 4S in the FIRST year with that MSRP. The Turbo will be a FREE upgrade considering their values in the future with plenty of $ to spare. I'm guessing you'll come ahead like $20-25K over 5 years.

The main reason I went for the Carrera was that I wanted to get back into a manual.
If the Turbo had a manual option, I probably would have gone for it.

1). When upgrading my S to GTS the premium for insurance went up by only $50/year. The TTS would have been increased by $1250/year. I call the insurance company and provide the exact VIN # to get the exact quote and factor this into my decision.

2) If the logic used is I should have gotten a TT, you might say I should have gotten a TTS?

But I understand your plight. Tough Decision.

FWIW if I could have afforded the turbo I would have bought that instead of the C2S.

I did this exact thing in 2014-15. I had a C4S up to high $140s and ended up getting a '15TT ("only" $152K then) up to $172K sticker "with options". Really didn't like the PDK and missed a MT. Added a Boxster GTS MT and then traded it on a Targa 4S MT (on order).
If you want to get back into a MT and aren't sure you want a TT (PDK), think very carefully. When I had both, I almost always drove the Boxster. Ended up trading the TT on an S550 to DD. I'm still bandaging wounds. Very expensive lesson.
