Active intake flaps, linear front running lights, sculpted rear brake lights… and that characteristic turbo sound that's gonna drive so many guys bonkers…

What kind of silver is that car? Rhodium? I don't see the hint of blue...

This probably the best recording I have heard of the new S engine with Sports Exhaust. It's from the Porsche website. Still sounds like a Porsche F6 but not as sonorous. I think it's ok.

Both Porsche and Ferrari seem to be successful in the sound engineering of their new cars.

Sound engineering is now an art and has very little to do with the "natural" sound of the engine. Look at the AMG GT, Ferrari 488 or even the Mclaren 675LT etc. The noises are controlled by the engineers, so it will probably sound just fine. Porsche are not idiot.

For turbo I think it sounds amazing, Porsche knows what they are dong with these cars - this will not disappoint. Thinking of picking up a 7MT just for some giggles, its been a while since I got back into a MT car.

I don't think it sounds bad at all. Has some depth to it. Not as raucous as the NA cars, but doesn't seem to have the buzziness of a lot of turbo cars either.
I think Porsche is going to be more challenged making the Turbo 4s going in the Cayman/Boxster sound good.

In the video the engine sounds short winded and there is no depth to the engine sound and little farts coming from the exhaust. My take on it!

Porsche used to be the company that made things that worked, and it sounds the way it sounds. Now like everyone else in the boutique acoustics marketplace they tailor the sound to whatever they think the market requires. And so we get buttons, and tubes, and switches to close off the tubes ….
Good or bad? Don't ask me. I'm just glad they stay middle of the road, and let the aftermarket guys go for the fighter jet market.

Its been like this for a long time now. I remember reading way WAY back when Honda (I think it was) was developing a motorcycle, that marketing thought should evoke the sound of a fighter jet. Honda engineers spent months analyzing fighter jets taking off. When they presented their work, marketing said "holy crap it sounds like a fighter jet! We can't sell that!"

I'm not a fan of sound symposers and other sound gimmicks used by many manufacturers.

I agree. Being a musician I have a good ear for tone. And I can tell it just doesn't have the NA low tone note of the prior car. It to me sounds like a small liter motor. But they did good with what they had. Just my opinion!

Yes, it will never sound as satisfying as 991.1. But the audio clip provided above by Chris3963 sounds better than M3. Still, Ferrari 488 sounds better than either 991.2 or M3. I guess this establishes a hierarchy of turbo sounds: 488 > 991.2 > M3.
