Monterey Historics 2015 - Personal Recommendations
Dear Rennlisters:
As a local to the area, here are recommendations for interesting events during the upcoming 2015 Monterey Historics
that are often overlooked by popular internet guides like this one:
http://www.seemonterey.com/events/sporting/concours/
***************
Tuesday August 11th & Wednesday August 12th
Automobilia Monterey

************************************************************************ **************************************************
Wednesday August 12th

These events below are listed in the guide...but some have changed venues for this year & I wanted you all to be aware of that.
So caveat lector!

Saturday Evening August 15th
Finally, the traditional 'Carrera Panamericana' Saturday reunion dinner:
This is where friends of the original 'Carrera Panamericana' & the modern 'La Carrera Panamericana' meet during the August Historics!

I was disappointed, not saying you won't, with the Monterey Aquarium. For one it was overpriced and it seemed you didn't get you full value for the money you spent. But that is what I get for living in a Beach town in Southern California where Long Beach's Aquarium is free to get into on some day's and some groups. But I am not saying don't go, the Monterey Aquarium fund's a lot of science and research with their income.

Eduardo, thank you, that's very helpful. My wife and I are already set up to attend a number of these events. Still debating about which auction to attend, just to observe and learn, not as a bidder. Friday's going to be our busiest day with the Porsche reunion, Legends, and Quail Lodge. All good fun.

Thanks for posting this. I'm planning on the Werks Reunion on Friday. The rest of the week I'm gonna play it by ear with work and see when I can get away. The guy who does my detailing works for a bunch of the people displaying cars at the Concours and he told me midweek they show the cars on certain afternoons right there on Ocean St. I'm trying to find out when that happens. A lot cheaper than a $350 ticket to get into the Concours.

Well, based on the experience we had the time we went to Pebble they could not get us in there if it was them paying us the $350. We beat tracks out of there and never felt such relief as when we were out of the car and ambling around Laguna Seca again. Anyway as you say there are lots of ways of seeing them for free. They are all over the place and the impromptu discoveries are sometimes even more memorable than the planned events.

Given the ridiculous hotel room rates this week ($700/night for a motel room), I guess the $350 ticket seems like a bargain to them…
I'm gonna just drive down for the days for the events I want to see.

The Quail is Now a Closed Club. If you aren't important in some industry or haven't been going for 10 years just forget about getting in.
There is also The Concours d’LeMons California on the 15 which is Free.
It is the Polar Opposite to Pebble Beach. It is where you bring cars that are falling apart or completely unique, though that isn't necessarily the point for each car that is brought. One year they had a convertable early 70's Caddy with a bulls-head on it and a tail in the back. If you lifted the tail ding dongs would fall out of it - an analogy to you know what (Number Two). And odds are you will see Wayne Carini there as well for that is one of the event's he never misses. He will generally rent a car from some car lot. The more eclectic and out or order the better.
Mecum needs to fill all those seats they set up as the number of cars sold their is probably on order's of magnitude greater than the other Auctions.
Barrett Jackson doesn't show for Pebble or Carmel right?
Although Hot August Nights, in Reno (they say Tahoe too but Tahoe doesn't have but a few event's due to cost to secure permits and pollution) starts August 1st and goes through the 9th Barrett Jackson does show up for that. About over 6-7 years ago it was difficult to auction off your car during the Reno event. But thanks to Mecum and a few smaller auction houses Barrett has lost a good portion of their share. That is why if you are lucky enough to get Velocity on your Cable you might have seen the Barrett Jackson commercial's announcing if you want to consign your car for their Reno Auction.

Cars on Display on Ocean Avenue, Carmel...
Some shops in town will sponsor private events that usually involve some fancy cars (usually Ferraris). But it will not compare to what you will
see on Tuesday or Thursday.
The latter event on Thursday will include a good % of the actual cars on display on Sunday at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. These cars
will participate in a Rally with their owners for 'fun' and also potential advantage in the concours competition. Should any vehicle that participate
in the Rally also tie with a competitor for first place, the trophy will go to the car that participated in the Rally as the tie-breaker!
So those of you looking for 'value', these two events on Ocean Avenue are it!

I'm unfortunately missing the whole shebang this year, but the concours on the avenue is fun and some amazing sports cars show up that aren't part of the Pebble Concours festivities. All the better, IMO, because I'm not particularly interested in many of the giant pre-war cars at pebble, but am VERY interested in so many of the great post war sports cars that show up on the avenue.
The "Rally" is fun to watch though, as it gives a visceral sense of the cars actually being used as cars.
