What an amazing guy!:

Has any fellow member driven across USA in 991? Or perhaps any other continent? If you have, what was your route and experience?

When I was a kid in the service I (naturally) had a Camaro (texas style big 4 barrel headers etc etc in a 350) I would leave Victorville Cal and drive home for Christmas to Dallas Texas in routinely 22 hours straight. I would bust up the trip back into 2 days but hammer home in one shot.
I can telly you it was almost joyous to get to the Texas State line and realize I was home. I can also tell you it was equally depressing to leave El Paso city limits and see the sign that said: Dallas 700 miles.
Thats only 65 MPH average but I would not stop to eat unless I had to get GAS/Food/poop/peep all in one stop.
The only bad trip I had was mom came home with me when I left the service for good and I drove home(beofre going back to NoCal for school) and it was Can we stop? I am hungry. Can we stop? I have to go pee etc etc. Never again!!!
My inlaws are a bit different. One time they took FOUR days to get from Vegas to Ridgecrest California 230 miles. One day they drove from Vegas all the way to Jean Nv. 20 Miles IN ONE DAY!!!!

Not saying much, but I happily drive 180 miles round trip for a great cup of coffee from one of my favorite cafés.
If I can't get at least 50 miles round trip on the car, I don't even pull it out of the garage.

I have been from Houston to Birmingham, AL in my 991 twice now for mountainbike races. 9 hours straight if traffic is good, 10.5 if heavy (Louisiana I-10 and I-12 are ususally the culprits if it's slow.)
I also went to Durango, CO last September. On the way there I stopped in Sante Fe around 12 hours, did the last 4 the next morning. On the way home I took a slightly different route and did 16 hours flat. The 991 is a GREAT road trip car, very comfortable at highway speeds and gets surprisingly good gas mileage for what it is.

Pfft lightweight.Try doing that in a 500 dollar used 1988 poop brown Honda civic hatchback with 140k on the odometer and 50 dollars in your pocket.
Btw the top speed of said vehicle was a terrifying 90, as evidenced by a brief but nerve wracking attempt in Nevada. Shimmy shimmy shake.
(Recalls his distant youth.......)

There was a story couple years ago of a guy in his 20s driving from , I think, Texas towards California in summertime who did not get out of his car for hours and hours who tragically died from a dislodged embolism that started in his leg . If you must press on, at least take a 30 second walk around your car every 2-3 hours...even if just at an off ramp.... and stay well hydrated!
Same advice, even more so ,for long airline flights.

Old story. What's really interesting is how little it has to do with having a fast car, and how much of it comes down to planning, prep, radios and carrying 67 gallons of gas! Between pee bottles and bed pans it doesn't strike me as anything you'd want to do with your 991!

WHAT? what does this have to do with being a hero? I wasnt saying I was any better than anyone else. THere were TONS of military kids leaving California at Christmas time (which is not the summer) going to all points east and the same on the east coast heading west. This was just in the same vein as the post. I had a 20 gallon tank I got way less than 20 MPG at 80 MPH and I had to stop every 3-4 hours to refuel that pig. I would get more drinks to put in the cooler, more snacks and a cup of coffee. Walk around while the car is fueling up. Staying up for 22 hours for a 19 year old is not a hard thing to do. I did MUCH MORE than that in college trying to pass my engineering exams. Sheesh.
Maybe you should go post this in a truckers forum where you have 60 year olds driving 65,000 lb loads, on all kinds of meds?
OTOH, no need to be a hero only to yourself and Internet strangers.
