Sounds like that vehicle's engine had issues with variocam operation, if I had to guess. I wouldn't let that scare you away from it if the repairs were completed either under warranty or by a reputable shop.

thank you very much for all the informations you shared.
I'm from France and owne a 2012 991 S with PDK. I have the "cooling error message".
Thank to you I found 1 pipe loosen on the "coolant shut off valve on engine by-pass circuit" and I replaced the COV for "air cleaner flap".
But I still have the message error.
Do I need to reset this error using a dedicated tool like "Foxweel NT530" or "Icarsoft car diagnostic tol POR V2.0" ?

I do not think a reset is required.
Worst case disconnect the battery for an hour and see if it clears the message

Well, I have a new to me, early production 991.1, 2012 with 78,000 Kms on it (Canada), and just got the Fault Cooling System error message in yellow.
Assuming it is COV’s, is it amazing it/they lasted this long??
I am 3 hours away from a dubious dealer…. And trying to figure the best strategy to approach this…. Before I drop it at a local independent shop with a blank cheque:
*Rad fans work
*PSE works
*Heat works
Dealer service history has no indication of previous issues, IF there has never been a campaign for the issue. All Campaigns/recalls complete.
After reading allll the posts on this, If I understand correctly, a 2012 Carrera S w/ Sport Chrono has 8 COV’s.
The *conditions above may indicate that the 3 ‘easy to get at’ valves may not be faulty :s
Im thinking I will order 5 or 8 updated COV’s (with new harness??), and replace as many as I can easily (I have ‘a guy’ & a hoist).
While watching for bad vacuum hoses, connections, leaks, etc. Replacing as many as we can get at ourselves, then clearing the code with his scan tool & see if it resolves.
If it does not, I will likely have to take it to the independent shop.
Am I on the right track? I want the car operating as designed, not just the light out. So maybe I should get 8 COVs & ensure they all get replaced?
Thoughts, suggestions or guidance ?
1. Is it possible to get a schematic of the vacuum tubes to find/follow them? Instructions? Ive seen the YT video referenced.
2. This fault Definitely indicates a vacuum issue? Im making a lot of assumptions/guesses.
3. Scan tool is the way to clear the code?
4. Where is best place to order parts? (Trick question: I’m in Canada)
5. Anything I should / could do while in there?
6. What to watch for? Im more used to American cars.
7. Is it odd that things went this long? Ive owned the car for a month!
8. Ive read there was a Porsche Technical Service Bulletin #TI-64-12, which may apply to the early 991’s with this issue. How could I find out if this would apply today to my car? I believe it was a very early build. i read some early production vehicles burnt :O

He was going to start with some easy stuff, loose hoses, low coolant, etc. PIWIS does not advise which COV is the one not reporting - this is exasperating.

If a valve behind the COV fails, you get the same message. I had a PSE valve fail & it threw the cooling system fault. FYI

I was at the shop Tuesday and my mechanic (Scott McIlvain) pointed out that very valve and how it was worth checking, then showed that it was holding vacuum OK.

I got the dreaded fault cooling system message. SMDH!!!!!! Taking it to an INDY dealer on Monday.
