Quality issues with my new 991 C2S: Help !!
Hi all,
Just got my new 991 C2S a couple of days back. Today while inspecting the car more closely I noticed to my utter horror that leather stitching on the steering column is coming off! I was shocked that a brand new car from Porsche could have such a quality issue.
I feel hugely let down that after paying close to $150k on this hugely specced C2S I got a car delivered with defect by factory. It seems that Porsche are starting to struggle with handling increasing volumes!
The dealer says he will get it replaced, but for me it's just not the same as a factory finished car. On top I'm scared that after the fix, my car's dashboard might end up rattling.
Is there anyone else on the forum who came across similar issue? How did you deal with it?

I must say I have not shared your experience and you have my sympathy. This is pretty disappointing and should have been picked up in final factory inspection.
I am on my third car from these guys and no issues at all along these lines.

As a manufacturer, I can tell you that zero defects is not possible. My company runs PPM rates of less than 50, which means 50 defects for every 1,000,000 parts. Think about that, it means 5 defects for 100,000 parts. I can tell you that Porsche's defect rate is very, very low and among the best in the world. I would be happy that the defect you found is easily corrected and not at all indicative of the quality of what you purchased. Enjoy your new car and know your are driving one of the best made!

Porsche performs a very comprehensive quality inspection prior to shipment, the car is inspected again at the dock, and the final quality check is made by the dealer. I don't understand why this defect wasn't identified by the dealership during their new car prep service, unless you gave the dealer specific instructions to not touch your car prior to delivery.

they'll replace it...a telephone button was merely sticking and they replaced then entire steering wheel.

Thanks all for the comments and sharing your experiences. In fact I have been driving Porsches for a while now 997 PDK being my first in 2009. In fact I have very high regard for Porsche quality control. Guess I am just frustrated that a visual defect like this went past undetected at the factory as well as the dealer.
In any case, might as well wait for it to be rectified and enjoy the car. I do love it .. Pics soon

A stitching problem like this is particularly hard to detect. Sewing uses two threads, the top one everyone sees is held in place by the bottom one nobody sees. If the bottom thread bobbin runs out the seamstress keeps going because everything looks fine. Knowing Porsche a replace bobbin alarm probably goes off, but maybe not in time to prevent a few errant inches. The result would probably pull right apart but who's going to go pulling on it? Next step the leather is glued to whatever body part, after which the defect cannot be seen and the leather is held in place by glue. There was only one brief moment when this could have been caught, it would almost certainly never show up during assembly or even final inspection. In fact I would bet it was not even showing at delivery. More likely a few easy dusting wipes or even gently grazing by hand is all it took to loosen a stitch or two. Could even have worked its way loose just from normal temp changes causing expansion/contraction. Once that happens, unravel city here we come.

I've only owned 2 of these things. Although brand new, neither have been 100% perfect. However, the dealers have always taken care of the few issues I've had. I always try to remember that old maxim: Don't sweat the small stuff. Enjoy your car. They'll fix it and it'll bring you years of great memories.
