I could have afforded an S, however, I'm not in the "money is no object" category and my priorities continue to be to pay off my mortgage, which I'll do this year, and save for my kids private college, which is almost done also (529). For me, getting a manual transmission true sports car that my 9 and 11 year old kids can go in with me was the highest priority, so the extra $12-15k wasn't worth it to me. I'd rather save it.
Regardless, thanks for all the thoughtful replies. It seems others have had similar experiences, and even with an S there's always the GTS, with the GTS there's the Turbo, and with the Turbo, there's the "why didn't you get a Ferrari"? I'm happy with my raw, pure 911. I just wish I didn't have to hear it from the peanut gallery that exists in South Florida.

Dude, it's just a car...the one you chose to buy for whatever reason(s). Once it becomes a phallus extender, you'll find that people will happily pull out their rulers.
After driving €400 cars for many years (with incredible much fun) I find it impossible to gather the energy for winding myself up about what other people say or think of my car.
it's my car, so what?
Now it's a Porsche, next year it could be a 20 year old Alfa Romeo again.

Funnily enough I was walking home last night and a silver 991 Carrera drove past followed soon after by a white Cayman S 981. Now maybe it was my slight disdain for silver cars (very nineties) but, attempting to look through the eyes of someone who isn't that familiar with Porsche makes and marques, the Cayman looked the far more expensive/flashier car.
Glad to hear but I think side by side the 991 oozes sophistication and expense. The 981 is a bit chunky, the lines not as refined.
I just wish that 991 buyers would be a bit bolder with their color choices. I have yet to see a guards red or racing yellow 991 in the wild and those are no cost option colors!
While I'd like the extra power that comes with an S, I'm not complaining.
What I can't STAND, however, is how every other day someone hears I got a Porsche, and they ask what kind. I tell them it's a 911. Then they ask which one. What am I supposed to say? Just a plain old 911. Sorry folks, it's not a S, it's not a GTS, it's not a Turbo. "Oh" they reply, like they feel sorry for me.
It's really beginning to annoy the hell out of me. Most of the people asking are just trolls anyway, driving Subaru's and occasionally BMW's. I feel like saying "well, what the *#%Q do YOU drive, a-hole?" but I just bite my tongue.
Imagine coming up to Ray Allen, asking what he does, hearing he's in the NBA. Then someone asks him if he was on the all-star team. No. Sorry. Just the all-time 3 point leader, but no, not on the all-star team this year. Just a noob. (Good analogy?)

Uh...yes it is. And when you look at the price disparity for what you get in relation to the money it costs...it's almost laughable. The performance differences between the base and say another 911 variant like the GT3, for example, is way more substantiated. But hey, that's marketing for you. And when you consider the average P-car purchaser...the car is used for rather mundane, average driving and not time-attacks. Most would consider the differences more related to cosmetic than performance. I'm sure the Stig can get similar lap times in both the base and S. Lol
