I've just read this thread. This Palmbeacher guy is ridiculous. But entertaining! Obviously someone sad their older model is now not the newest and greatest.

For them, being able to park the latest model in their driveway is the main thing.

Honestly, I passed on buying a Porsche for years and years, and not because of money (I owned numerous cars as expensive or moreso). I went out to buy one in the early 90s, but the bone-crushing ride, lack of a power adjustable seat (bad back) and the crappy (for Florida climate) air-con put me off. Then came the 996 with those headlights and that instrument panel that looked like they were done by the Japanese guy who drew Astro Boy. Finally, with the 997, Porsche struck just the right balance on all fronts. But now they've gone and smoothed it out and techno'd it up just a bit too much for me.

But never say never. I've got another 5 years of bumper-to-bumper warranty on my 997, and by that time I'll be pushing 70, so perhaps a 991 will be more my cup of tea. Of course, Porsche might have a new model out by then that I can sit in my pajamas in my den in my rocking chair and watch the car on my iPad whilst it drives itself...better than the 991 by the same margin and in the same way the 991 is better than the 997
Now wait a second. You've never owned a classic air cooled Porsche, unlike many of us who are impressed by the 991. You had considered one once but because they were so uncomfortable you passed on the opportunity. Hmmm. Skipping over the 996 which you denigrate, you have settled on the 997 as the sweet spot of Porschedom, and have decided that the 991 is not worthy of carrying on the Porsche spirit. Moreover, those of us who owned early 911's, 996's, 997's, and now appreciate the 991 are merely posers who don't understand the "very soul" of Porsche as well as the guy who has owned a single model for a couple of years in his lifetime. Really.....

man the recipe for these posts is always the same:

1. I could have easily afforded the 991...its not about the money
2. it lost its soul? My xyz 911 has so much soul
3. I like luxury and comfort so i bought a 997 not a 993 turbo for the same money, but god damn if my 997 is not a stripped down race car compared to a 991.
4. Steering feel...this new system is terrible
5. Panamera 2 door. so much bigger, etc.

God at least get creative. Talk about how the seat belts are too luxurious and the trunk latch doesn't have the same high quality feel it used to.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life is that when someone says “it’s not about the money”, it’s always “about the money”….

And something I've learned is that when someone ridicules someone else's preferences or sincere complaints suggesting they just can't be true............they just seem a little bit too defensive.....but maybe that's just me:big bye:

Best of both worlds - I'm keeping my 997.2 C4S Coupe and getting a 991 C2S Cab. Seriously, for most of us who use our 911s to tool around town and do some spirited back road driving, the steering on the 991 is just fine. As for the console, it's is definitely on the luxurious side. And there's something wrong with that? The console on my '09 997 is downright opulent compared to that of my first 911, an '87 Targa. Palmbeacher doesn't like the verbose (Would it be nounose, since the words are actually nouns?) lettering on the rear. There's an easy fix for that - opt for the model delete as I did. Don't want piped in exhaust sound? Another easy fix - don't get the sport exhaust option. Although, technically, when I put the top down, I guess I'll have piped in sound even without the sport exhaust. How can you possibly not like a car that's lighter, has more horsepower, handles better, rides better and is still a 911? I'm looking forward to picking mine up in July.

I can only suggest you get the Plus steering and hope for the best. After a few hundred miles, especially switching back and forth between 997.2 C4S (I had that car for 10K miles and it's a brilliant road car) and the 991, I expect you'll have a different perspective.

Definitely pay for "911" ... silly thing, but a thoughtful touch in the eye of this beholder.

I think the Symposer is there as part of the intake system. PSE is separate. I'm not sure. Either way, Symposer (?) is fine, it's fully defeatable and it has a rather fun induction suck when it's open, just like taking the insulation off the fire wall, but without the brain-addling resonance. The alternative would be the Sharkwerks exhaust, which I expect is the real deal rather than the flaps and valves of PSE. The 991 exhaust has all kinds of crackles and barks to it ... I'm curious to hear how the open front muffler design from Sharky sounds.
Sidenote: I'm astonished to learn BMW is literally playing recorded noises through the speakers ... I had set that nonsense aside as a silly joke to buy off eBay for $10 and play V8 noises or a top fuel dragster from the cigarette lighter though the FM radio of a Toyota. That's embarrassing.
There's a lot to like about the 991, but these are as yet undefined changes and incremental moves in a general direction that existing drivers are reticent to embrace -- let's see this car in GT3 and GT2 variants, let's see it arrive as a Cup race car and let's see the teams win Nurburgring and Sebring and Daytona, then it begins to earn acceptance over the course of years, just like every 911. This is a car held to the highest expectations, not a new model year of an M Series or AMG or maybe whatever McLaren offers in their entry-level 12C. These are uncertain times where VW, with an unbroken record of buying and breaking historically unique and irreplaceable car makers, is at the precipice. Let's take the benefit of the doubt and accept the 911 as the next generation with the auspices of the Porsche family and the heritage of the 997 and all 911's before it, but that's not to blindly trust that VW will faithfully carry the 911 forward and be true to character of Porsche.

This thread is living proof sand can enter any man's vagina and cause enough discomfort to launch a diatribe on the internet. Good times.

Food for thought........It is just a car boys and girls......lots of cars have been made before it and will be after it........

There are people just as passionate about their Honda CRVs, etc., that doesn't have the perceived car guy or I've "made it in life" connotation of Porsche ownership, etc.

They compare year to year iterations with their pro and con lists............it all just makes us car nuts.......and also gives us something to do.........

Only thing with the luxury brands or more relatively expensive cars, it seems, is that people bring bigger egos into it to compare their relative success in life, or to trump each other in their postings to feel bigger, etc...having a new car to analyze brings it to a head.......

Go check out the web forums on Mustangs, Prius, Honda, Mazda, Infiniti's,etc...........the tone of conversation/posts is so much different and also generally more real/honest, with not as much confrontation.........Can't wait to see if the new Boxster brings such threads as the one above......

No need to share that detail here, just let your gynecologist take care of it.

Perhaps for you, it's "just" cars, but for me, no, Porsches and being an enthusiast about cars is not "just" the trivial pursuit of boys and girls or the need to declare oneself more of a car enthusiast if the focus is a less expensive car.

For you, perhaps it's really more about the status and the self-aggrandizement to proclaim yourself as having "made it in life" with the laundry list of cars in your signature -- you're the one motivated not to talk about cars, but to post condescending opinions about other people discussing cars here.

You have misinterpreted what I have posted.........

What I am trying to communicate is that we should basically not attack each other in the forums and be more constructive.........and a bit nicer.......

As an observation.........It seems that in the forums for higher end - more expensive brands, etc.....it is an ego battle on posts at times......

Every enthusiast has their own particular brand they love.......and that should be respected.......they all serve the purpose of being cars in the end....

Playing nice......Probably should have said it just like that and not used any analogies or sarcasm......cheers.......

It is a public forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Even "Palmbitcher". Any of us can chose not to participate or read these threads.

I think in many cases you are right, but I also have read many posts on this board that infer that the 997 owner can't afford a 991, and that is the reason they say they don't like the 991. I think that is the reason some 997 owners state that money is not the reason they dislike the 991. I am sure that there are many 997 owners that can afford a new 991, but just don't want one, at least not now.

I do not have a strong dislike of the 991, but do like my GTS enough to not want one at this time. Believe it or not, it's your choice.
