Folks, let's all stay calm. Every new model of 911 creates a stir. Those who think it is an improvement and those who long for the "old" days. Been this way since the first 911 supplanted the 356

I've been asked where I stand on this issue. OK, having consumed the Porsche Kool-aid here's my list

1996 C4S Fabulous car but had the well known 993 warts.

2000 Boxster S - Loved it. No issues except it was too attention getting (Yellow).

2002 996GT2 - wow amazing. A bit soft for the track and made me tweak lines to later apexes.

2004 996 GT3 - I liked it better than the GT2, better handling and wonderful linear power.

2007 997 GT3 RS - a bit of a disappointment. More versatile than the 996GT3 but no quicker. More HP and more weight. Had I known I'd have kept the '04

2010 GT3 RS - now we're talking, a serious improvement over the previous model. At least a second faster out of the box and the understeer was removed. The '07 '08 needed a GT2 rear sway bar to restore neutral handling.

From my perspective, each was an improvement in some regard over the previous model (exception was the 07 GT3RS which was much better as a street car but no better on track than the 04 GT3).

The 991 is to me an improvement over the 997 and the only downside is that my 997.2 C4S DD is likely to be worth less and the 991 is more expensive.

So the arguments will rage ... but let's keep it civil please.

Best,

You've completely misinterpreted the point of the gentleman who started and named this thread. Reread the first post. The OP (who has in fact ordered a 991) is wondering why everyone is concentrating on negative issues (hence the name Negative Nancy's) instead of the many improvements of the new 911. The thread isn't asking for people to respond with criticism, it is in fact asking why people are so negative.

Personally, I wonder at the point of regurgitating the same complaints over and over. As soon as anyone makes a positive comment about the 991, someone chimes in with a redundant counterpoint about the center console, the rear deck lettering, the piped in engine sound, the curved headlights, the numb steering, blah blah blah, ad nauseum. I get it. The point has been made (many times over). The Negative Nancys don't like it. Don't buy one. Just don't get your feelings hurt when you try to keep up with one. Sheeesh.....

...all I got out of your post was that you kept with the 993 for 11 years and you're already talking about getting out of your 991...

Makes perfect sense -- the 991 series feels disposable in every sense of the word and the 993 has looked and felt like a modern classic since the day it was released...No doubt you'll quickly move on from your 991 Turbo as well to the next new thing...

Since all you're concerned about is "hauling ***" perhaps you should consider the 2013 GT500 -- it also has numb EPS steering but 650hp and will "hide" from your 991.[/QUOTE]

I had thought about it. I love big motors. And they don't handle that badly either. I drank the Porsche cool aide long ago but I still think the 991 is the best one (for me) I have driven. I do like hp so when a turbo is available I will have one.

Maybe you could explain to all of us dullards why a luxury-car center console, verbose rear deck lettering, piped in engine sound, curved headlights, and numb steering were necessary to make the 991 go faster than a 997?

I didn't call anyone a dullard but feel free. I never said any of those items were necessary. In any event you are the one making an issue of them, not me, so I have no need to rationalize their existence any more than I need to explain how full leather, a nice sound system, or colored seat belts might relate to the 991's perfomance differential. Why do you insist on an explanation? It's pointless. You've already made up your mind, right? Good for you. Now let it go......

Oh thank you most holy one! I was hoping and praying you'd give me your blessing to buy another car!

Undoubtedly a lot of current Porsche owners will do just that, but considering the small numbers of these cars that Porsche has sold throughout the years, that's probably exactly why decisions were made in the boardroom to revamp the car to appeal to a broader market...people who need and appreciate all the computerised driver-assists. People who focus-group research showed walked away from buying a Porsche in the past because it was too noisy, or the ride was too stiff, or they lacked the upper-body strength to pull up a parking brake.

Porsches have always been expensive. They have never been mass appeal cars. An S550 Mercedes is cheaper. Go buy something else.

Just finished a test drive of a new 991S. Wonderful, impressive car. This one had PDK, PDCC, and sport exhaust. It screamed, cornered unbelievablly well and was FAST. Are there things I like better an my "old" car, yes, but the only real thing holding me back from buying one is the cost to trade in my 14k mile 2006 997S.

Any for you folks who own 991s, good for you. You own an amazing car, IMHO.

"At some point we all get it. Perhaps actual owners would like to have a common area to talk about the model itself without the constant reminder that these folks are mad, upset over Porsche new direction."

Perhaps if those individuals are capable of affording a new 991 - they should be equally capable of staying out of this thread if it bothers them so much?

"After a post or two it is obvious who these people are and most of their talking points have been heard."

Right - because you're so above it all I've got a very simple solution. If you don't want to read negative things about the 991 - stay out of the thread titled "negative nancy's" or threads with similar negative subject connotations...Seems like an incredibly simple idea to me...
A few quick notes:

1) I was not speaking to you directly.

2) My statements still hold true. I was not only talking about this thread. One can go to other postings in the 991 forum where some folks just cannot let anything positive be said about the 991 without having something negative to say.

3) Which leads to this point. I do not go to other forums and say something negative over and over again about a product I do not own, or continually state I will not buy. That's like spitting in the wind. After awhile it would just make me seem petty or jealous. Or a classic troll.

So, using your language, yes I am above it, because I do not do that. However I understand some people cannot help these urges and will bitch and moan no matter what.

4) Just like you, I am entitled to post my critiques if I do not agree with something and will do so.If you don't like the 991 why post it all over the forum? Same solution as me not reading a thread.

You're preaching to the choir. I agree completely, in fact, that was my entire point. Tell it to Porsche. They're the ones trying to make it appeal to a wider market, and in so doing, chipping away at its very soul. Obviously some current Porsche owners don't care, as evidenced by this thread. For them, being able to park the latest model in their driveway is the main thing.

Honestly, I passed on buying a Porsche for years and years, and not because of money (I owned numerous cars as expensive or moreso). I went out to buy one in the early 90s, but the bone-crushing ride, lack of a power adjustable seat (bad back) and the crappy (for Florida climate) air-con put me off. Then came the 996 with those headlights and that instrument panel that looked like they were done by the Japanese guy who drew Astro Boy. Finally, with the 997, Porsche struck just the right balance on all fronts. But now they've gone and smoothed it out and techno'd it up just a bit too much for me.

But never say never. I've got another 5 years of bumper-to-bumper warranty on my 997, and by that time I'll be pushing 70, so perhaps a 991 will be more my cup of tea. Of course, Porsche might have a new model out by then that I can sit in my pajamas in my den in my rocking chair and watch the car on my iPad whilst it drives itself...better than the 991 by the same margin and in the same way the 991 is better than the 997

oh yawn yawn.

The 997 ain't not stripped race car champ.

Do you really need heated seats, navigation, power windows, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlights etc etc to go faster than the 996?

I can do this **** all day gramps.

90% of the people out there, including on this forum wouldn't know good steering if it bit them in the ***.

the only word to describe all this nonsense: insecurity
