Okay, I am going to be ordering a new 991 Carrera S in December or January. This all came about because my wife gives me the approval to order a new GT3 RS after she saw the Porsche display at the Rennsport Reunion. Local dealership confirmed that no GT cars were being built (except the 997 GTS). So after alot of debate GTS - Turbo - 991, I decided to go with the new 991 Carrera S. However my options right now are putting the car at $145K - $150K. Its heavily optioned, obviously, with some special items that you can only find out by getting with the dealer's build sheets - not online.
Is this nuts - for a Carrera S? Keep in mind that this body style is around for 14 years. Also my GT3 RS build was about $165K. 2 totally different cars and 2 totally different drives. This will be my first new 911 - have had other used 911s, including turbos, sc, and a 993 C4S. So I wanted something different and not the usual - so the options got away from me alittle.
.......2 totally different cars and 2 totally different drives.........
There's the crux of it right there. I don't think it's necessarily crazy to spend $145K on a very special 991 S, but you also just got the OK to buy a 991 GT3 RS! It's a matter of what you really want, and are you willing to wait for it if necessary. Good luck with your decision; sounds like a fun one.
You are not nuts at all. Get what YOU want. Make it special for you. I did that for my 06 997S Cab and still love it to this day. But please don't order this special car in silver with a black leather interior! If you can order a custom car, make it unique!
Whether this is nuts really depends on your pocket, if you can afford it without any negative financial consequences, knock yourself out. Hell, you could add another 10k of options and touch $160 i think.
Personally I would want the turbo or turbo s for that price range. If ordering a 991s, as I have, I would ease off on the options by around $30k.
Edgy,
My thought on the car's performance/exterior is: Carrera White, white wheels, PCCB, the duck tail and front valance package, insignia delete with just the "911" in yellow on the rear deck lid. Also with PDK, PASM with sport suspension, sport exhaust, sport crono package, PTV plus and the sport steering option. I had this steering option on my BMW called "active steer" and it was great.
The interior is still being worked on. There will be more options available as Porsche releases them through their first builds.
Do it! I will, if I had the funds. I honestly believe that a big part of the appeal of these cars is the ability to personalize them, both new and after.
The last of the 997 Gen is going to be a better car than the first of the 991 Gen. Porsche always improves a car over time, and the first few years are a bit of a teething / trial period. I would wait until the GT cars come out and get one of those. Wifey said it was okay....

Sounds good, except this. Why the yellow "911"....because it will match the calipers? Not a huge fan of painted wheels (other than silver), either. Congrats. Buy your wife some flowers.
Have fun driving a GT3RS daily...You're making a GREAT decision, if the funds are no stretch, that is. I configured my own 991 online (for fun only) and was up to $135K with what I thought were cool, but useful accessories.
All I ask is this: Please give me a chance to buy yours in about 5 years!
