I agree 100%. My 2018 GTI SE with cloth seats has taken a beating for the past 18 months, and it’s perfectly clean.

GTI and/or Golf R makes an excellent practical companion to a 911. Can you still get them with the 6 year warranty or is that over?

Nothing wrong with having a VW or two keeping your P cars company.

With the detailer style fabric cleaners and some brushing (drill brush is handy but the $2 plastic special works fine just takes longer) and a hot water extractor you can save pretty much any cloth that is not frayed.

The AWD of the R makes a big difference in snow. Even with snow tires.
I noted a number of FWD cars getting stuck on steep hills after having to stop. (some even sliding back a bit)
No such issues with the R!
The multi-mode suspension is also very nice. You can go from Luxo A-4 feel to R8 with the touch of a button.

This year—2019—is the last year for the 6 year, 72,000 mile warranty. Getting one while it’s hot hatch and covered.

Been thinking of an R for my "run around car" also. (used one)

Are the Manual's robust enough for a tune or are they best left stock??

I won't a manual simply since my Truck and TTS are Auto / Automated manual (PDK).

The manual seems to have a lot of issues when tuned. Not that it can't be solved by upgrading clutch components, but who wants to do that on their daily? I have a DSG Golf R myself, mostly because the manual in the Golf R just isn't satisfying to use compared with a 911. I have the JB4 piggyback tune, which is adding about 40 HP over stock currently. It's a nice boost, and the car is plenty fast. In fact, there are scenarios where its quicker than my 991.1 S just due to DSG / AWD.

Tough call then. I think I'd probably leave it stock since I have close to 600hp to play with in my TTS.
It's probably a fun car stock anyway. The R's make good power.

Yep, it's plenty really. The way it delivers power, to me, doesn't match well with the MT anyway. You'll find all the power is kind of in that 2,000 to 4,000 rpm range. It's not an enjoyable car to take to redline like a 911 is

From my experience, no. COBB and Burger both have clutch “saver” tunes...but, you’ll end up chewing it up...because you’ll want to see how the bigger power maps feel. DSG holds a lot more power reliably...or just budget another 2.5k once your clutch fries and go stage 2/3 and have fun! IMHO, YMMV and all other disclaimers apply.

Just curious: how many GTI/R fans miss the 2 door version? My son reverted to a 2016 GTI to avoid 4 doors.

I hate the 2 door cars. I think the 4 doors look great and love the practicalness of them.

Just my opinion though.

Hmmm... I really DIG 2-door Golfs. Their lines aren't all chopped up with the 4-doors. But each to their own, right?

P.s. I noticed your TTS is a 2-door. Now imagine it with 4-doors, right? I REST MY CASE!

Interesting how much "Golf appreciation" there is among Porsche owners.
I was researching cars for my next DD and did a deep dive on the Golf lineup before deciding on a 2019 Golf R, which I've been driving since April. Love the extra HP. Especially appreciate the AWD and electronic dash (Audi junior). Recently replaced the huge rear headrests with the Euro-spec, low profile ones, but that's the only mod I've done so far.
The Golf R may be too small for some, but it's very comfortable for me (6'2"). All the different "settings" allow you to change the car's personality depending on how you want to drive it. And the AWD takes the dreaded torque-steer and wheel-slippage out of the equation.

Great choice! I see that you have a Macan as well. I "went" through the Macan experience twice before letting go and getting into a Golf. Personally, I enjoy the Golf over the Macan. Maybe it's the size... What're your thoughts? What's your "go to" car?
