I dont think they are fake. Although i know some good "fake" stuff can come out of china, it's likely one of the products Porsche outsources to China to make. They have been on ebay for a long time and ebay is very hardcore about counterfeit products. Suncoast has the alum look ones for $99 now, so paying $65-$75 on ebay isnt far off. I would bet any "differences" between some from a Porsche dealership and the ebay China units can be attributed to variations over the years/ different factories.
I have one of each, one from China off eBay and one from Suncoast. To me there is no difference. They look, feel and fit 100% the same.

I have both as well. Purchased one from Suncoast and one off eBay. They are the exact same product, down to the packaging and instructions. If anyone could tell the difference I would be shocked. And I will guarantee these are made in the same factory, there is no way in hell it is worth anyone's time to counterfeit these by creating a new production line for them. These have to be made on a ghost shift and sold out the back door as this type of thing usually is.

Is there a 997 size and a 991 size? I'd like to get them for both cars.

I ordered both for 991s but I believe the 997 cap is the same but the tether is different. The 991 one comes with 3 different tether options but none of them would work on the 997 mounting style as far as I can tell.
I’ve not seen the 997 style on eBay so may not be enough of a market for them?

The one for the 991 is different than the 997. I know this cause a friend bought me the 991 version by accident as a gift and it didn’t fit my 997. He replaced it with the one for the 997 and obviously it fit.

Just curios - do they list the country of origin on the cap or on the box, especially on the one from Suncoast? The black one that came with the car has Germany stamped right on the cap.

Not that I can see. My original one has Germany stamped on the plastic, but let’s face it - it’s ugly AF and nobody would care if it was stamped on it. The new one looks much nicer, so you don’t want to see any label stamped on the side.
I installed mine last evening. The Ebay one is high quality and indistinguishable from OEM (except maybe for the paper warning label telling you to have it dealer installed because gas is flamable... lol )
Although, I probably should have heeded the warning. I made a wrong assumption that the button that held the strap to the gas door was a pin that you pulled out i/o molded as part of the door plastic and I broke it off. My car is in storage in upstate NY, we got up here late last night, it was cold and dark, but I was excited to see the car so I was a little aggressive with getting the old cap tether off.
FYI, to anyone doing the install, the tether is rubber and needs to be streched over the button head with a pick or something similar. It doesn't just pull off.
Anyone have a link to the plastic gas door backing?

Damn, that's annoying. Yeah - I used the tines of a fork to carefully pry mine over the button head. Putting it back on is easier than taking it off.
