A few months ago my first ever 911 was totaled by a careless driver after only 4 months of ownership...I loved it so much when I eventually received the insurance payment I didn’t even consider any other car. Quickly bought this:
F80 M3. You can get a 19 for 10-12k off. Huge room in back seat and highly highly tunable platform. Will kill an S5 or any Audi product for driving feel and emotion. A tuned S4/S5 wont touch an S55 stock. With a tune the M3 goes to over 500hp easily and weighs only 3550 lbs.
I really struggled with this vs the 991. Much cheaper, faster, more practical... we are expecting our first now, and it kinda bums me out that the 911 can't handle baby duty until he/she is in a forward facing seat.

And even when they are able to be in a forward facing position, it's still a PITA until they can just sit in the seat directly. The other thing to consider ... if you've never had kids, you will quickly realize how destructive they are to the inside of a car over time and what they do to the back of the front seats with their shoes. ... Hence why I didn't want to deal with a 911 during those years (and swapped to a Macan S and a Honda Pilot last week).
The flip side is, I can't wait for the them to be a bit older so they can really enjoy the ride with me in a 911. That's when I plan to be back in one.

The M3 is not faster.... and the build quality is night and day.
For families the 5 series is a huge step up from the 3 in terms of quality and materials. The 550 or whatever number they are on now will be as fast as the M in a straight but not in turns. Competitors in terms of power AND cost need to be Audi RS and AMG C63. The S and 43 are 340 competitors. Some people love these M cars and if that's you then get what speaks to you.
IMO a GTI is more fun to drive and you have enough money left for a 987/981 or even a base 991.1. It's not an apples/apples comparison though to a singe M3 do everything.
We'll never know all the variables on the internet without being there but my first impressions are someone was in the wrong gear. In sport plus[to eliminate driver error] my lowly 991.1S Cab [PDK] more than keeps up just fine

I'll tell my PDK to choose a better gear next time and to shift faster.
In reality he probably had a tune or something which makes a 325ish WHP .1S pretty weak against a 475-500whp car.
Such different perspectives and use cases in this thread.
The way I interpret this question...is what high-end weekend sports car would I get if I didn't have the 911 Turbo S?
Anything I get that replaces the 911 has to be another equally fast sports car.
What non-American sports car out there is of better quality, better looking and better performing than the 911 Turbo for the money? I still haven't found one.
Spent a whole lot of time researching a new R8 (coupe or conv.), finally went to dealer, discovered I can’t even fit in either one (6’6”), sticking with my 991.2.
At this point there is no other car that fits the bill of affordability (relative), comfort (relative), thrills (relative), technology and ease of maintenance (absolute) as my 991.2 C4S. I could afford a used McLaren or Ferrari, but driving it less than 2k miles a year makes it not worth it. I suspect I’ll be keeping it awhile.
