I assume that while it is ok it is still technically low? I have always felt that max/full means just that, not a little low.

From what I've read/watched, the correct spot for the oil reading is right in the middle of the indicator.

I had the oil changed at the dealer (right after run-in) and when it all balanced out after the drive home, that's where it sits.

It also seems to be running cooler by a couple of degrees after the change, which was unexpected.

Fresh oil always runs a few degrees cooler. This lasts for about a 1,000 miles, give or take.

Spot on - was a little surprised to fill about 9 when most DIY guides mentioned putting in 7.3.

Same here on my 991.1. I do back it up on ramps which I think helps it to drain slightly more since the drain plug is toward the front of the pan.

So there is no option for stone, cold reading?

For 996s, just about everyone knows that the best reading is to allow the car to be completely cold, turn the ignition (but not start it), wait 5 seconds, and the reading appears on the dash.

There is also a way to check it hot, and it’s not much different from the 991.

I don’t understand why there isn’t a procedure to check while cold.

I asked since I just went over 2k miles yesterday and I checked it - it was at the Max line and I have not added any since buying it new.

Neither do I. Makes no sense at all.

Problem was I was about 10 miles from home in the middle of the night. So I drove slowly back home and topped it off in the garage. Hope I didn't damage the engine. Next oil change instead of driving away I just went around my cul de sac for 15 minutes. Until my neighbor came out and asked what the hell I was doing. Maybe you don't have to drive it, and can just let it run in the garage?
Forgive me for stating the obvious, but when driving around waiting for the measurement to kick in, you could keep a quart or 2 of oil in the car during the drive and then stop and add some if you find that you're low. I changed the oil in my Macan on Saturday and that's what I did...

I don’t understand why the engine has to be hot to add 200-500ml?

A few years ago when I had my previous car, I was chit-chatting with my service guy at the dealer, and asked him that very question about MAX & proper fill. He said that MAX is just that...the max. He also said that Porsche's guidance to them is to fill to one bar below MAX.

This oil discussion has just led me to a new revelation about my current 991.2 GTS. I've had the vehicle for 14 months, and for the first time remembered to check the oil when I got home, and had pulled the car into the garage. I did a double take when I saw that there aren't any bars on the gauge now. Learn something new every day.

It doesn't need to be HOT to ADD the oil. It NEEDS to be hot to READ the oil level. The 991 is just set-up to read the level after the coefficient of expansion has maxed. Unlike the the 997 for example. The 997 reads the level cold. I liked the 997/987 system better, but they are both easy & accurate to use.

Yes, the first time. Is there a problem with that? I've just never understood the obsession of "topping off" one's oil. Does anyone actually believe adding a few milliliters of oil between oil changes actually makes a difference in the longevity of the vehicle. Hell, there isn't even a consensus on this board as to what level one is supposed to "top off" to. I probably should have checked it along the line to see if it was burning noticeable oil, but I guess I'm spoiled. I haven't had to add a drop of oil to a vehicle between changes for close to 30 years. Driving multiple vehicles, I don't put many miles on any of them.

I did have it changed at the dealer at 12 months.
