Default Topping off oil - how to check measurement

Hello. I'd like to add a bit of oil to top it off. How do I check the measurement as I add a little bit at a time?

Keep engine on and watch the digital gauge on my dash?

thanks

Not exactly. On the .1 anyway, once you lift the engine cover, the oil gauge on the MFD will not work until you have driven the car for about 10 miles or so. What you will have to do is put in the oil, drive the car, then check MFD once it re-calibrates itself. Real PITA, but it is what it is.

Add 200ml at a time. Drive. Check. Repeat till you nail the bar you want.

Unfortunately Lex is correct. Add small amounts at a time and let it settle, drive a bit, check again and add a little more if necessary. Better to go slow than over fill. That's a bigger problem.

And it is also important to be on very level ground to measure it accurately!

These guys are SPOT-ON. Been told overfills #1 service issue my dealership sees on 911s. Your dealership may offer free fluid top-offs. Maybe consider swinging by their service department to let them guide you through it.

Unfortunately as others have stated you have to drive it at least 10-15 minutes before the gauge will read the level (991.2). After I changed my oil for the first time I took it for a drive and about 10 minutes later an error message popped up saying something to the effect of "oil pressure low, stop driving immediately and see dealer". Problem was I was about 10 miles from home in the middle of the night. So I drove slowly back home and topped it off in the garage. Hope I didn't damage the engine. Next oil change instead of driving away I just went around my cul de sac for 15 minutes. Until my neighbor came out and asked what the hell I was doing. Maybe you don't have to drive it, and can just let it run in the garage?

Based on your question, I want to make sure you also know how to check your oil level:

(is the 991.1 the same as the 991.2? I think so)

1) Oil hot.....over 190
2) Car on level ground
3) Turn engine OFF
4) Wait 90 seconds
5) Turn ignition ON, but don't start motor
6) Read gauge

In my experience (and some math I did when I had my 997), each bar in the dashboard oil graphic is about 13oz of oil. If I need to go up 2 bars, I put in 26 oz. Seems to work for me.

Yes, each bar is about 350 mls. But the problem is when the bar is lit is it seeing ounce #2 or ounce #11? That's why I say go 200 mls at a time. After an oil change from the dealership, I adjusted the level up over the next 3-4 drive cycles till I get the bar I want for the next 5,000 miles.

The wait is a necessary evil to ensure all the added oil has migrated down, it prevents over fills. That is why most brands do not place their fill tube there but let's not get into that...

So how does the dealer ensure every car that comes in have the correct level of oil? They drive each car for 10 miles?

I've heard the Porsche service computer can read the oil level instantly during the fill process.

I literally just had this issue with my indie shop. We did an oil change to the recommended levels and got an overfill warning after a day or so.

I went back and they took out some... same warning a day later.

I went back and they took out a little more. So far, so good. They subtracted appropriately from the recommended level and recorded the number on my invoice at the shop so that we'd have it next time.

A dipstick would have made the whole process easier.

Having have done three oil changes in mine, if you drain the oil for about 45 minutes or more, you get to put in exactly 9 quarts.
