...The 992 is better in most ways, not all. However, all 911's are all timeless. .... I'll take a 993 Turbo all day every day.
To me, the 993 Turbo is the definition of classic Porsche. I don't know if I could actually handle the probably never ending maintenance and tail chasing I would do with that car if I actually owned it, but man...that car will always captivate me. There are very few cars I stare at on the road, and the 993 Turbo is one of them.
About 20 years ago my son-in-law bought a 1997 993 Turbo. Very fun car that we would swap off when doing back country drives. Kids happened and he sold it to my son in Calif. The son heavily modified it, basically converting it to a rear wheel drive GT2. As my son's career and family grew he had less and less time to drive the car so he sold it back to my son-in-law. The car was now in Miami Beach, FL. As soon as I learned about the upcoming sale I volunteered to drive it north to the son-in-law in NJ. The son-in-law was busy with his own career and was planning to ship it up to NJ. Bottom line, I got the ok to drive it up to NJ. Fun drive and the car handled even better than I remembered.
Dropped off my Turbo today at our excellent local indy shop. Nice 992 Turbo S was also there, same color as mine. I haven't seen too many of these in person yet, a few pictures comparing the two strictly from a cosmetic perspective.
Now don't get me wrong, I'd take a 992 Turbo S in a nano-second over my 991, but I think the 991 is a more attractive car, at least from certain angles.
Thoughts?
I have a 991.1 turbo S convertible and because of the prices of 992s and the interest rates, I have been waiting. However, just from a looks perspective in my opinion, the 991 is prettier. I dislike the rear of the 992. I dislike the shifter (looks like an electric razor). I don't love any of the stock wheels. I feel like on the convertible the hump is back behind the rear window. 991s don't have it. 997s did and now 992s have it again. I am considering buying a 991.2 Turbo S convertible with low mileage and just tuning it and keeping it perfect.
I always do a double-take when an old thread I started and long since forgotten gets bumped back to the top... This one was from about 30 months ago when the 992 Turbos were just hitting the streets.
Now we probably need to start looking out for the 992.2 Turbo S hitting the streets, probably starting at thread about whether the 992.1 Turbo S is 'better looking'?
Agreed, the 991.1 is the better looking car, both front and rear. I also prefer the .1 nose to the 991.2, but that version is also much nicer looking than the 992.
I agree the 991 is much better looking than the 992. It looks like they made the side inlets smaller, and we're all going for the larger GT3RS look. The only thing I like is they deleted the headlight washers, a feature I have never used. I'll be keeping my 991TTS.
If you drive your 911 in winter conditions, then you might feel differently about the headlight washers. The photo below is my 997 Turbo, but it clearly shows the value of headlight washers in snowy/icy weather. This photo was taken after driving home one evening and getting caught in an unexpected storm. I don’t usually drive my 991 Turbo S in conditions like that, but I still like the fact that it has headlight washers.
I agree with you that the 991 cars are better looking than the 992 cars.
The only thing that I like better on the 992 is the rear taillight integration. That’s it.
That's actually one of the things I dislike the most about the 992. I believe headlight and tail light designs can be some of the best design elements of a vehicle. The integrated/invisible look is a flash back to 1960-80s flip-up or hidden headlights, which I never cared for.
The additional bulk is also unattractive. The 991 was last great-looking 911.
Both amazing cars with the 992 specs being otherworldly but it is a bit “bloated”, no disrespect, for me. I still love the look of the 991 and 997 and the 993 TT.
I like em all. I'd be very happy with a 992. I do think the 991 has aged well. I have a 991.1 but think the 991.2 looks slightly better - I prefer the front end lights. Normally an 8-10 year old car looks dated. That is not the case with the 991 in either .1 or .2 trim.
