I am curious to see that your engine build can be done at the $50k mark; I just put a new gearbox in my 996 and when the dust settled, it was close on $40k (CDN), so perhaps building an engine up is something in my future.

Cheers,
that’s way too much money Who charged you that amount of money
You got CMS or BRyan Copans
In the states

I paid 18 US for the gearbox from CMS - so about $23k CDN. Then all the supporting parts (mounts, cables, shifter, clutch, flywheel, labor, etc.) made up the other $17k.

It was spendier than expected, but I am really happy with the end result, both with the car and the amount of weight I have lost by giving up beer to buy said box.

Update:

We decided to send out the 68mm turbos for a rebuild just in case. They are listed for sale in the classified ads if anyone is interested. I didn't realize that aluminum flanges were required to run the silicone boost hoses. I'm learning more about this platform every time I speak with Sam. We are planning to go with a larger turbo setup with the build and hopefully post some competitive times at the track.

The upgraded Dodson PDK clutch pack with billet sump also arrived. The clutch had some entry issues with customs but we were able to resolve it per Sam and Charles' assistance. Once the rebuilt block comes in I'll go pic crazy and detail the reassembly process.

It would be a shame to run VTGs on a built engine. Definitely try to squeeze in bigger turbos into the budget. Then an intake and standalone ECU 🙂

P.S. If you have a stock diameter exhaust, you need to think about upgrading that as well if you want to push bigger numbers.

@Nikolov We decided to go with the ByDesign Xona XR kit. We have a catless FVD Brombacher exhaust on the car. Eventuri intake kit is beautiful but a shame it would be covered up. We want to go with a Motec eventually.

unless you need more than 1100 (who doesn't?) ... motec is not needed IMO

@bigrpowr We would like to push the platform safely on the stock ECU to see what numbers can be achieved both on the dyno and at the track. We definitely want to go with Motec in the future. 1300 hp would be a sweet spot

Update:
The lull of the holidays is past and we have been planning our schedules around the installation of the built block so we can have the Porsche ready for tuning once the thaw is complete. We want everything to be sorted out before the first event of the racing season.

The turbos came back from the rebuild and they looked stunning. It was cool to see all the parts together that make up the Stage 4 kit. The kit sold in about three weeks. Shout out to Sam for incentivizing the sale with some tuning support. The new owner of the kit will be pleased!

Now we wait for the block and turbo kit... since I was able to convince the wife to let me purchase the Xona kit, maybe it will work for the intake manifold .

Hello Rennlisters,

Update.

The ByDesign XR kit arrived and the construction and design exceeded expectations. All the big names in the industry with this kit. Everyone at the shop had googly eyes. Again, a big shout out to Sam at ByDesign for the ongoing support and the amazing products!

The injectors are being shipped out for testing and cleaning. We installed the Dodson clutch and blessed it.

Now we wait for the built 4-liter from Evospec. The first race of the season is on May 20. Hopefully, we can make it! Stay tuned!

@SamboTT@ByDesign Good call Sam! Not pictured are all the high-grade clamps, hoses, and other hardware. This is truly a bolt-on system.
If anyone is considering the ByDesign XR system give Sam a holler.

" ...All the big names in the industry with this kit. "

Not all.
AIM Performance/ES Motor/ES Motor UK are big in the Porsche industry and have all of the Porsche World records (at least the one's without asterisks).
None of them use this kit.

@8SecDD Good catch. Should have read "some" rather than "all." Didn't mean to sound all-exclusive. I've owned a well-sorted AIM 996 turbo and I can attest to their workmanship, brand, and knowledge of the Porsche platform. ES Motors and AIM certainly have a positive reputation with numerous world records. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers which it seems I did. Cheers!
