Granted these wheels have more of a fan blade effect which catches flying debris, however, the .2's had a similar effect ~albeit less pronounced~ which obviously caught flying road debris hence barely chipping.

I assume there are more of the standard platinum finish wheels, but is the chipping also happening to black painted wheels? I think the black wheels are a gloss paint and possibly more durable than the semi-gloss platinum. The damage looks more like a finish issue than a design issue, especially with owners reporting damage with so few miles. I am thinking of getting a GT3 and was going to go with the standard semi-gloss platinum finish over the back wheels, but may reconsider now.

For what it is worth, I have OEM, gloss black CL wheels on my 997.2 Carrera GTS and no chips after 3.5 years and 10,000 miles.

I haven't noticed any paint chip on mine because I haven been looking for one. Just another problem to deal with which takes away from enjoying the car.
As others have noted its most likely the wheel design contributing to this and even after repaint it will most likely happen again. After you have the case # what would be the next step? Have the dealer bring in their paint guy and hope he doesn't damage your wheels while being taken out and do you think you be happy with the guy spraying your wheel in the parking lot? They want to use their guy to fix and don't think they will let us go to our own shop.

What do you think the fix should be from your dealer? Respray the wheel is temp fix.

Yes, according to our informal poll, 60% of owners with black wheels also had this problem. Same proportion as platinum wheel owners in the poll.

If anyone missed this, and wants to add their experience to the poll, please use the link above.

2015 model, standard wheels, 500 miles, street only, no track, got my first chip on one of the front wheels... did anyone ever here a class action resolution to this? i.e., has Porsche changed the process/materials for painting these wheels? I am absolutely certain that when I contact my dealer, they will replace the wheel under warranty. But if there has been an update, might be nice to replace all 4 wheels with new ones vs. wait for other chips to come and then change under warranty...

I've just applied to my dealer to have the wheels repainted under PAG warranty. We shall see where this goes. Car has done 6000 miles in 14 months in 5 countries. Chipping started to become evident when car arrived in New Zealand probably due to our very course chip seal and dirty roads. The car has seen track days and some high speed road work (which also accelerates rock dashing I find anything around 90mph+ and you see significantly more damage). Ive posted some pictures below. Ive given up with the touch up stick. The stone chips are showing uniform pattern on the scalloped side of the base of the blades. There are iovr 500 of them now and its not isolated - Im just an extreme example due to the roads here and my advanced usage of the car and its age. I may be 3-5x further ahead in this area than many but Im 100% confident this will become an issue for every owner. Its a combination of paint finish and spoke design and Im not even sure there is an ultimate answer - certainly replacing the alloys is not the answer unless a better preparation coat or sealant has been added to the finish....Ill let you know how I go with he claim but expect it will be long and drawn out at this stage as Im an early adopter but once other owners get onto the case it will be easier for all to get a resolution...

What a mess. Let's hope PAG can somehow come up with a resolution.

Mark, wow, that's a really severe rash. I started a case # with PCNA a while back, just so they would have a record of the problem if it becomes worse, which if your wheels are any indication, it probably will. Keep us up to date on what happens and good luck.

Mike. It's accelerated by the use of high pressure washers and alloy wheel cleaners. I have spent slot of time where I couldn't wash the car for a week or more after fast driving and track. I have found the brake dust very hard to remove from the Matt paint without a good scrub. This lifts paint scabs which intensifies the situation. I'm confident everyone's wheels will look like mine assuming they like a bit of back road pushing on. AutoX or track, but for me it's taken 14 months and for others it will take 3 or more years....

The solution is likely a more robust finish, such as powder coating instead of painting (as long as it can be done without compromising wheel strength).

^That is what I intend to do when the chips become a mental burden. I will have them powder coated. You just need to make sure you are dealing with professionals who have experience/understand w/forged aluminum. They just have to keep the heat under, I believe, 300 F

So a lot of people are having issues and I see a lot of "I've filed a complaint"--but what has happened from there? Does PCNA even get back with clients about this? What does dealer say? How are they resolving?

BTW, is there a touch-up paint for the various finishes on rims?

No way it takes 3 yrs for anyone to see a chip. Unless they've changed something in the paint process, I say that people with normal finish and street driving see a chip by 1k miles
