They do this awful “oil and chips” or “tar and chips” on our roads. They put down a layer of tar or oil followed by a layer of ground up rocks they call chips. It’s usually finer than gravel but still hell for anyone that likes their paint. And for motorcycles - yikes!
they CLAIM it extends the life of the road so paving lasts longer. But I thinks it’s BS and someone wrangled a contract long ago and has found a way to hold on.
After a period where traffic embeds the chips - they re-stripe the road if it had painted lines before the process began.
we’ve seen newly paved beautiful roads “tar and chipped” and it’s very frustrating. There are times we drive well out of our way to avoid the mess.
There are many a road in Texas that are “chipseal”. Not only do they do a number on your car and it’s paint but they make for a brutal jaunt on a road bike. Nothing comparable I am sure to the cobbles in Roubaix but it’s got to be close.

You mean you don't like it when summer temps melt the tar until it bubbles?

It must be some kind of a scam. I have yet to find a person that doesn't absolutely hate it. But without govt, who would build & maintain the roads. lol...
Stage Rd out here is very popular with bicyclists, so they must be very upset about all the gravel. I guess I'll have to avoid it for a while. In addition the body paint, I get small chips on my wheels, which I hate.
