If I were to guess I'd say it's because the 720S is one of the fastest cars out there, and that's very appealing to many. I drove one, and it didn't feel special beyond being fast. In fact, my friend that owns it said he wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't fast, and if he didn't have to in order to get another special car. He said his 675lt was much more fun.

I really like the 720. It is a great car. Crazy fast. But, I feel more connected to my 675lt spider. I also was getting a crazy deal on a SVJ and wanted to try it out. I prefer cars that provide more feedback. I am anxiously waiting for the 720lt.

A big part of my fun is to go fast and 720s does this the best in its price range (around a track or straight line).
Typical buyer of these cars value comfort over everything (non car forum people generally). East entry, good visibility, have a conversation inside the car.. They aren't going to use the speed of a 720s or a 675. They just want a car that looks good and comfortable on long drives. 720s meets the criteria of most owners who want exotic cars IMO.
If one isn't going to track and only use a car occasionally (because they have too many cars) then a 675 would meet the visceral type of criteria that those types of buyers would like.

I've had 675 coupe, spider and 720s.

But that is neither a sufficient nor necessary condition to what makes a car special. If it was, a Tesla Model X would be unparalleled.

If the SVJ had 720 performance I would have considered it but for ~2x the cost the 720 is a no brainer. I guess I am biased now but there isn't another car in the 720 price range that comes close to the total package. Ferrari is trying with the F8, they even raised the price slightly.

Add downpipes, exhaust and a tune and you are near 900HP and yet have the comfort to drive cross country in style. Kind of hard to beat.

This has picked up traction on LT and a bit on mclife. I want to see what RL thinks.

His car burned and a cause was not determined. Insurance paid out and he is whole again. What should McLaren be doing? When another brand catches fire does the factory call the owner?
I don't see the issue here.

He wanted another one straight from McLaren at MSRP since they’re quite rare and he likely can’t get another without paying ADM. I do understand that and since the fire wasn’t his fault after only owning it for 11 days
