Very reasonable approach. Given that, I would go for:

1. Lightweight Specialty Alloy Rear Axles with 10 Ceramic Ball CVs
2. Wire Electro-Discharge Machined High Strength Specialty Alloy Transmission Output Flanges
3. One Piece Forged Magnesium Wheels
4. Ceramic Wheel Bearings
5. Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Oil Tank
6. Carbon Fiber Anti Roll Bars
7. Carbon Fiber Induction System
8. Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite Pulleys
9. Full Titanium or Inconel Exhaust
10. Titanium Suspension Springs

Andf, possibly later:
1. Very high spec lightweight dampers
2. One Piece Forged Aluminum (Lithium) Brake Calipers

And, ultimately, perhaps certain pieces of the suspension in carbon fiber and/or aluminum metal matrix composite.

The first parts to be made will be left and right rear axles and CV's. They are applicale to GT3, GT3RS and R.

Following that, the next parts to be done will be left and right transmission output flanges and they will be applicable to R and any future car that has that gearbox.

FYI - I have started the process of creating certain lightweight parts for the R (certain of the which will be appplicable to the GT3 and the GT3 RS) by ordering originals of the subject parts. As these parts come in, they will be scanned to create CAD models and then each part can be looked at in terms of what can be done to weight optimize it.

3. Unsprung weight reduced
4. Rotational weight reduced
5. Mass centralization with priority given to rear weight reduction

Totally agreed! I would be aiming at the same direction.

Now all of the initial original parts are ordered.

Well thus far, I have received the following R parts (some of which are applicable to GT3 and GT3RS) for review and, if enginerring determines that significant weight reduction and/or enhancement is possible, scanning:

1. rear axles and inner and outer CVs
2. rear wing
3. front and rear springs
4. oil tank
5. front and rear anti roll bars
6. front and rear brake calipers
7. front and rear wheel bearings
8. front and rear uprights (wheel carriers)
9. left and right side skirts
10. rear trim piece (around bumper and exhaust pipes)
11. clutch pedal
12. brake pedal
13. gas pedal
14. rest pedal
15. front left and right inner and outer tie rods
16. clutch and ancillaries
17. alternator
18. starter
19. front and rear wheels
20. trunk lid hinges
21. engine lid hinges

Quite a few more parts on the way including the engine lid, the entire exhaust syustem, the wiring system, the air box and the entire induction system, rear diffuser and engine undertray, etc. etc.

Thus far, three sets of all of the lightweight equivalents are being made to order. Perhaps some others will be interested. Given the rave reviews that the R has garnered everywhere, I would be surprised if more would not want to even further enhance the car.

I'm going to send you an email. Would really like to do this in my R and one of the RS cars

Great thread, Robert.

I'm assuming the front and rear hubs can also be machined to be lighter and stronger. Not much weight loss, but it all counts

Which part do you mean by hub?

What is your estimated weight saving with all of those parts? And the approx cost...? Thanks

Am shooting for 60+ kg. As to cost, let me tell you once we have the first three sets as my original costs might have been off. Further, I am addressing more components than I originally thought I would. Of one thing I am sure, however, which is that the R is, as I have previously suggested, far, far more than the sum of its parts and, as such, this type of weight reduction will even further enhance the experience.

What an interesting project. Need to keep turning over rocks to find an R for me. The next call would be to Mr. Linton and see about getting a few special bits for the car.
For now, back to reading the Kussmaul Chronicles.......

Robert

Out of interest, have you looked at the impact of the weight savings of your package from the perspective of weight distribution. I have no engineering background so I am speaking from complete ignorance. However if, hypothetically, the majority of the weight savings are coming from the engine, what impact will this have on dynamic settings and weight distribution etc?
