Thanks for the link. If I'm not satisfied with the look of the gaffers tape I'll try this stuff.

Matte yellow 1080 wrap in the RS. The sample pieces that are available are sufficient in length to go around the wheel. No need to purchase a whole sheet.

I just got regular sewing thread. You can experiment with different textures and diameters. It looks cool- kinda gives it a hand sewn effect. I'll rewrap it and post some high res pics.

Sweet. I guess it's one of those DIY small projects that if it doesn't work or you don't like you can always try again or completely remove. Thank you.

How/where did you get a sample piece? This is the best I've seen yet, with the edges tucked in

Thank you, I just purchased in red. Now I'll compare this to the gaffer tape…

Thanks guys. I was too dense to find them on my own....

So a couple of quick questions, awew911. I assume the bonding agent is self contained on the material. Is there a peel off backing or similar or is it just pressure sensitive? Once bonded to the wheel, and in case I don't like the look for some reason, how difficult is it to get off?

Yep... You just peel off the back. If you don't like it, it's a glue free experience. Thank the engineers at 3M.

When I apply it, I just pull it a little tight to make sure it goes into the grooves. I use one of these to make sure it's in there nice and snug...

So I tried out the 1/2" red gaffers tape and am reasonably pleased with the result. It took a few attempts to get the length and technique just right but with 60 yards of tape, I certainly had enough to experiment with!

I wrapped from back to front so that the overlapping tape seam would end up underneath the wheel rim and pointing away from the driver. One wrap seemed adequate and made it easier to tuck the edges of the tape into the seam. I used a sharp edged plastic upholstery trim tool to do that but honestly a fingernail would probably work pretty well.

It would look more professional if one didn't have to cover the stitching but there's really no way around that. I'll live with this for a while, or at least until the 3M 1080 vinyl trim sample that awew911 suggested shows up and then I may play with that. But for now, this is a pretty decent $10 mod.
