Which year GT3 sounds the best?

With a stock exhaust, which year GT3 engine note is loudest, most organically pure, and most "Porsche" sounding?
Is it a 996 GT3, 997.1(.2) GT3 or a 991 GT3.
My 2013 911 C2 PSE started to sound a bit "synthetic" after a while and I am unsure if the 991 GT3 or other Mezger engines can produce a sound that is richer and more satisfying.
Best,
David

997.2rs is pretty sweet. I would go with that. Towards redline in 991 is very good, but lacks down low rpm.

Any GT3 with the 3.6 Mezger sounds amazing. The metallic rattles and roars are really a race car sound. Sorry, the DFI GT3 may scream, but it's no Mezger. In the end this is the 991 GT forum, so the overwhelming responses will be favoring the 991 GT3 sound. Just thought I stick up for the Mezger since I do believe it's sound is very special.

Stock:
Newer = better, generally
Modified:
Tough to say; my 991 with GMG center bypass sounded better than a buddy's 997.1 with GMG center bypass; then I added catless headers and the gap grew larger

Never owned a 996 GT3 (and never had the desire to) but having driven both the 997.2RS and 991 GT3 I would pick the RS in a heart beat if I had to pick one car.

1) so called Mezger by Dr. Mezger clarification are not Mezger
2) 6,7,1 follows different Db and emissions regulations so on 991 at least the center muffler
delete put apples with apples
3) 991 with center muffler delete = State of the (flat 6 ) sound art
Low Mid and to 9k rpm

997.2 RS with headers, 100cell cats, and bypass will kill it every time for me. Rumbles, rattles and hisses at idle, screamer all the way to redline like a caged lion in the back, healthy gurgle on deceleration. Mezger GT1 to the core.
The 991 gt3 has some intake chamber noise piped into the cabin to artificially help its exhaust note. Perfect match with the doppelkupplung.

By the posts it looks like it is not on the 991, either way I came home after a couple Christmas parties
so the symposer comment was a cheap shot.

Pretty sure the 991 GT3 does not pipe any noise to the cabin. This was also discussed on another thread s while back.

Really like the sound of the 991 when shifting - sounds like a cup car! Nothing artificial or enhanced with the Mezger either. Just think the sound of a high revving flat six sounds great!!
