Just had a chat with the Cleaning Lady

It has nothing to do with whether or not it is cheaper. Turbos are cleaner than NA cars, much cleaner. One thing is for sure for VW, Audi and Porsche - they need to come out of this fiasco as having very clean running vehicles in order to survive. Turbos and hybrids are the only current viable option available to them. I just don't see them continuing with N/A motors that get 15 mpg and burn less clean than other options.
While development of a new Turbo GT motor (pretty sure its been in the works), is certainly pricey, in the long run, it is a less expensive endeavor to make more power than the refinements a N/A motor requires.

They are turbocharging because of the 50mpg EPA mandate by 2020 that a fleet needs to average. Again key word "AVERAGE".
I do think the turbocharger is a quick fix to this issue. But I bet the next generation will be hybrids or the generation after that. They will milk that 918 tech all they can.

Lol I promise you no one gives a damn about the cars being clean besides the EPA. If people truly cared, we'd all be driving hybrids and electric cars. Their are plenty of cheap ones.

Check out this article which puts further confusion about the 991.2 GT3 staying NA:
http://www.total911.com/exclusive-porsche-confirms-next-911-gt3-will-be-naturally-aspirated/
This morning I put these questions to August Achleitner, the man in charge of 911 development at Porsche, who revealed firstly the next generation of GT3 engine WILL use natural aspiration. Purists can breathe a sigh of relief.
Achleitner said: “Some people are concerned about us changing to the turbocharged engine and how this will affect other models, but we would like to keep natural aspiration to run in parallel with the turbocharged engine and so for the next generation the GT3 will be naturally aspirated.”

^^^Great source!!
However, like all politically correct leadership he left an out: "but we would like to keep natural aspiration." What we "would like" and what we get can sometimes be different.

Remember porsche is the most profitable car company in the world for a reason. They are probably more willing to do the bare minimum to the car just to milk more money out of us without spending more.
But probably what will happens is VW and audi quality will probably suffer in an attempt to increase profit margins, or there will be just larger than previous price hikes on all new models.

Take this quote however you choose to interpret it from the article:
"So too will this be the final GT3 with a naturally breathing engine. The 4.0-liter flat-six makes 500 hp and runs up to a raucous 8,800 rpm. Torque is 338 pound-feet of torque at 6,250 rpm. In other words, the meat of the power comes into the high revs, and the sound behind your head becomes ever more alive as you hold onto the gears."

And 991.1 RS owner better to sell immediatly if it was true
before the explosion of the then super inflated price
That was before DieselGate impacted, 488 homologated at WEC etc.
they would HAVE liked to keep NAs but...
Do they want to turn 991 GT3RS "most perfect, most ELUSIVE 911"
to the
991 GT3RS "most perfect, most EXPLOSIVE 911" ??
