I rode in my friend's car today. We noticed that when accelerating from say 40 mph in PDK, there was a more aggressive downshift than when doing the same in PDK-S, where the car didn't downshift.
Is this to be expected?

PDK-S won't downshift if in manual mode. In auto, it should downshift as well as, if not more aggressively than, PDK.

That's what I thought too, was in auto.
It downshifts aggressively when the car is slowing down, but didn't downshift when suddenly accelerating, while the regular PDK did.

PDK-S won't kick down in either manual mode or PDK Sport auto mode. It will only downshift automatically only in the default auto mode. I rarely drive in either auto mode, but the times that I've tried default auto it seemed to downshift at least as aggressively as my old PDK Carrera S. I has been a while though....

I believe it will downshift when you brake, just not downshift when you push the gas pedal harder. At least that is what I gather from the posts I have read recently.

There is no "kickdown" feature with PDK-S in PDK Sport mode; IOW if you stomp the throttle it won't automatically downshift to a lower gear like a normal automatic so as not to upset the balance of the car with an unexpected gear change; when exiting a turn, for example.

However, it will aggressively execute rev matching downshifts on it's own under braking, so as to be in the powerband and the correct gear when you get back on the throttle.

okay, I think I understand...regular pdk gas foot stomp, down shifts like any other car and in pdk-s it does not...correct ?

Almost.

PDK-S has 3 modes: regular auto, auto sport, and manual. In manual and auto sport it will not downshift if you stomp the throttle. In regular auto mode it will.

You're totally correct about regular PDK. It will downshift with a throttle stomp regardless of what mode it is in; auto, sport plus auto (when equipped with sport chrono) or manual.
