Hi Bill,
I drove the new boxtser-s the other day:
- yes, gap is certainly reduced (I also owned 3.6 GT3), chassis is much more stable -and superior to 997 GT3/GT2..but its a mid engined car..boxsters/caymans were probably always better
- steering - could have been worse..but no gt3 feeling- still good.
- PDK: Ok..shifts fast..but after 10 min it become boring for me
- biggest - and really biggest disappointment: Power and again Power, the 315PS doesnt come in any way near the 997.1 GT3..still a huge gap..only in 3rd gear at 4000rpm this car is moving "forward"..- the cayman wont be any faster.
I really like the new boxtster..but its what I guessed before I drove it..it convinces more by the looks..the performance despite the lower weight wasnt what I expected. Would I pay 80K for a new one?..probably not..a second hand one - one day..maybe yes..for a daily driver yes..but Chris Harris "fascination"..I didnt feel that.

I would prefer a proven race motor and less weight for both the street and the track, especially as Porsche's recent MO is to use its customers and their wallets as beta testers for new technology.

If by a "race proven motor" you mean Metzger, you're asking for comes with more weight, a lot of it, in the wrong place. Unless you're asking for them to prove this motor out by racing it, in which case we agree.

I think you have to ask yourself "what" any RS might be; since the 991 GT3 is already using the 4S chassis, there is no longer that differentiator between the models.
Since AP appears to have "indirectly" stated that there is no manual transmission (given his comments regarding the development of the GT3 PDK) then there will be no differentiator there either...
since there is no manual, there is no l/w single mass vs dual mass flywheel either...
SO what is left:
- weight reduction
- aerodynamics/body styling
- engine performance
- chassis
- final drive ratio
- cosmetics (new bucket seats)
Naively I don't see much to differentiate any RS from the GT3 model...
