Fuel to the fire!

Car and Driver’s July issue just came out, where they choose the 25 “greatest” (i.e. “most important”) cars since 1955. They are not ranked, but listed chronologically. Four Porsches are included:

1978 Porsche 928
1995 Porsche 911
2013/14 Porsche Boxster/Cayman
2018 Porsche 911 GT3

Honorable mentions go to the 959 and Carrera GT.

I’m not saying I agree/disagree with the above or whether they should have included the 911R. However, for those of us stuck with plain vanilla .2 GT3s, it’s a nice call-out and further recognition that our cars are special. For what it’s worth, the commentary seems particularly enamored of the engine.

Also, the list appears to consider all vectors. They are not just looking at sports cars. The 1970 Range Rover, 1986 Ford Taurus, 2004 Toyota Prius, and 2012 Tesla Model S are each included, for example.

Among other conspicuous omissions, I think it particularly glaring to not have selected a single Mercedes-Benz.

Yep- not surprised.

This is the longest I have kept a car and no desire to move on to some thing else.

I love my 2018 GT3 Manual, but that is a strange list of the best (or most important) 4 Porsches in the last 65 years! Even among 993's, the 1995 is the least desirable year (aside from RS), imo. I guess it was the first (in USA, but '94 in RoW). I'm not sure if the .2 GT3 should be on that list or not, but the other 3 would certainly not be on My list.

Anyone I know with a .2GT3 LOVES it and thinks it's the best Porsche they've ever owned...my speedster elicits similar reactions from me...interesting that CGT only gets a mention

Agreed 100%.

If we are looking at the entire history of Porsche cars, none of those cars listed by Car and Driver would be on my list, not even close. Porsche made too many GOAT cars in my opinion. My lists would include (but not limited to): 964RS, 993 GT2, Carrera GT, 74 RS 3.0, etc.....

2013 Boxster/Cayman or 1978 928? Are you kidding me?!

Unfortunately this type of ranking is subject to considerable “discussion”. There are a lot of Porsches since 1955 that rank above my GT3. As far as MB is concerned I would rank a 55 300SL Gullwing far ahead of many distinguished Porsches over the same time frame.

I will say this; the 992 GT3 will have to be really special in my mind to get many to upgrade.

Will be interesting what type of "foo foo dust" they throw at her and I am not just talking 25 to 30 more HPs.. They will need to lighten her up some and make her more attractive because many liked the .1 better, in terms of looks, but I preferred the .2 and love the scoops on the engine cover.

I think the list accomplished its mission. We are talking about it, distributing the link on social media and all clicking on it. And they picked a list of cars that will stir the pot and cause more discussion. It's a different ranking than every other GOAT list out there. They could have picked a bunch of LE GOATS that almost no one owns or connects with other than magazines, online reviews and forums. I get it. Strongly disagree with it but get it.

The list is not really which car is better than another its more of what has been "important" in the automotive world. People who are getting their knickers in a knot and saying I'd rather have an XYZ (Maclaren 600LT) over a Mini are missing the point. I am not agreeing with the list - just saying that they spoke to cars that changed "paradigms" or were important culturally or from a historical significance e.g, BMW 2002 for "first sports sedan" or GTi for mass produced hot hatch or ground breaking like the C2 corvette or the first mustang etc. Everyone gets up in arms over these lists. Its just entertainment and an opinion at the end of the day. Not everyone has to agree with everything.

Just to stir the pot they did show a winged/manual 2018 GT3 and not a 911R or the GT3 "neutered" with the Touring option or the boy racer RS or GT2RS etc... Kidding - its been too civil around here recently.

So, how does the 2014 Cayman fit into that rationale? Is it really that groundbreaking compared to the 2012?

Mass produced - Really good mid-engined Porsche? They're saying when they really became good and stepped a bit out of the 911's shadow. They could have picked the first Boxster which started Porsche down the road to great financial success along with the 993. As much as the 964 gets good press, Porsche was not in good shape financially (not positioned for sucess) in 1991-1994 for various reasons. The 993, a better economy, the Boxster started them on the road to where they are now.

I would still take my 991 Turbo over a 2013 Cayman or a 1960 mini - but i get their point (even if i dont agree).
